What to see in Calella de Mar

Although Calella de Mar underwent a spectacular transformation in the 1960s, it still preserves its historic center. Even the Can Salvador de la Plaça estate , now home to the municipal library, still bears witness to the importance of agriculture in the local economy for centuries.

The most interesting part of the town is the area around the Plaça de la Vila, where an important market used to be held. Attention should also be paid to the houses with Gothic elements, such as Can Bartrina, as well as Can Galceran or Can Giol.

Other representative buildings are the chapel of Sant Quirze and Santa Julita, from the 16th century and dedicated to San Telmo, patron saint of sailors. It was also used for other purposes, as it functioned as a school and meeting point when the Town Hall did not yet exist. In the past, it housed a beautiful Gothic altar that was destroyed during the Civil War.

Also, do not miss the church of Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau . Neoclassical in style, it was built in 1747 and enlarged in 1785. Its façade exhibits some reliefs that deserve your attention.

Also take some time to visit the lighthouse of Calella, one of the most characteristic symbols of the city, located in the same place where there was a medieval watchtower.

As for the museums of Calella, you can visit the Municipal Archive Museum of Calella Josep Maria Codina i Bagué . Opened to the public in 1979, it is located in a 17th century house and exhibits the work of several artists from the region. It also has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Calella and the Maresme. Here you can see minerals, fossils, archaeological equipment s, tiles, popular ceramics, textile machinery, fabrics, tools of traditional trades, documents, dresses, embroidery... There is also an art gallery, an old pharmacy from the early twentieth century and a reproduction of an old kitchen.

Finally, we encourage you to discover the first Museum of Tourism in the world, opened in early 2016.
