Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar del Segura is the place where 19th-century engineering quite literally saved a town from being swallowed by the desert.
The Town That Almost Disappeared Under the Sand
By the late 19th century, shifting dunes were advancing between 2 and 8 metres per year, threatening to bury Guardamar entirely. The solution? A visionary project led by engineer Francisco Mira, who planted more than 600,000 trees — pines, palms and eucalyptus — across 800 hectares. The result is today’s stunning Pinada de Guardamar, a vast green barrier that still protects the town.
The Roof of Spain (And It’s Military)
Forget skyscrapers in Benidorm. The tallest structure on the Iberian Peninsula is right here: the Torre de los Americanos, also known as Torreta de Guardamar. Standing 375 metres high — taller than the Eiffel Tower — it was built by the U.S. Navy in 1962 to communicate with submarines.
A “Lady” with a Powerful Story
If you know the Lady of Elche, meet her “cousin”: the Lady of Guardamar. Discovered in 1987 at the Cabezo Lucero archaeological site, she was found shattered into more than 50 fragments. After meticulous restoration, she became one of the most important symbols of Iberian art.
The Caliphal Rábita: One of a Kind
Hidden beneath the dunes lay an extraordinary treasure: the only almost-intact Islamic monastic complex (Rábita) from the Umayyad period preserved in Spain. Dating back to the 10th century, it was discovered during the very reforestation works that stopped the dunes.
The Prawn with a “Coloured Tail”
The famous Guardamar prawn stands out not only for its exceptional quality, but for its striking tricolour tail in shades of purple, red and yellow. Paired with the local ñora — a small pepper dried directly on the dune sands — it forms the golden duo of the town’s gastronomy.
Did You Know…?
Every 31 January, Guardamar celebrates the Fiesta del Árbol, a tradition dating back to 1902. Local children continue planting trees each year, honouring the forest that saved — and still protects — their town.

The Costa Blanca, stretching along the coast of Alicante province, is one of Spain's sunniest corners. Long sandy beaches, hidden coves, whitewashed villages and mild weather almost all year round make it easy to see why so many travellers keep coming back.
It's a coast with many personalities: lively Benidorm for families who want everything close at hand, quieter Altea and Calpe for couples, and a mountainous interior just half an hour away. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and sightseeing, while summer is all about the sea.
Make sure you visit:
Start in Benidorm, where the seafront promenade and the Mirador del Castillo viewpoint give you a first taste of the Mediterranean. A short drive north, the old town of Altea climbs a hill of white houses and cobbled lanes to a church with a striking blue-tiled dome, perfect for a late-afternoon stroll.
Further along, Calpe is dominated by the Peñón de Ifach, a huge rock rising straight out of the sea, while Villajoyosa charms with its brightly painted houses on the seafront. Heading south, don't miss Alicante's Santa Bárbara Castle, with panoramic views over the city and the bay.
Beaches we think you'll like:
Levante Beach in Benidorm is the classic choice, with golden sand, calm water and plenty of cafés and beach bars just steps away. For something more relaxed, Albir Beach, next to Altea, has clear water and a pleasant promenade at the foot of the Serra Gelada.
In Calpe, the Arenal-Bol beach lies right beneath the Peñón de Ifach, ideal for families. And if you love wild landscapes, head to La Granadella in Jávea, a small cove surrounded by cliffs with some of the clearest water on the coast.
Family-friendly activities:
Benidorm is a paradise for children. Choose between Terra Mítica, a theme park inspired by ancient civilisations, the slides and wave pools of Aqualandia, or the sea lions and dolphins at Mundomar. For a change of pace, take a boat trip to the little Isla de Benidorm, just off the coast.
Inland, the Fuentes del Algar near Callosa d'en Sarrià offer waterfalls and natural pools where you can cool off on hot days, with easy paths that suit all ages.
Local delicacies you have to try:
Rice is the star of the table here. Try arroz a banda, cooked in rich fish stock, or caldero, the fishermen's rice dish of the southern coast, and, if you head inland, arroz con costra, baked with an egg crust.
Look out for salazones (cured fish) and fresh seafood in the harbour towns, and for something sweet, buy some turrón from Jijona, the famous almond nougat. On a hot afternoon, a glass of horchata is the perfect way to cool down.
Make the most of your visit:
The Costa Blanca is a great base for exploring both coast and mountains. These are our favourite trips from Benidorm:
- Fuentes del Algar (25 minutes): waterfalls and natural pools surrounded by greenery.
- Guadalest (30 minutes): a mountain village perched on a rock above a turquoise reservoir.
- Jávea (45 minutes): crystal-clear coves and a relaxed old town.
- Elche (1 hour): a vast palm grove listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
