Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Costa Ballena and Rota
Costa Ballena and Rota hide stories and traditions that make the destination even more special.
-
Why is it called Costa Ballena? Local legend says that an old whale travelled the world looking for the most beautiful place to rest… and chose this very coastline.
-
Nearby, in Chipiona, nature takes centre stage. This area is one of the few remaining habitats of the common chameleon in Spain, earning it the nickname of the chameleon’s kingdom.
-
Rota is also known for its strong agricultural roots. Its inhabitants, called mayetos, are famous for their vegetable gardens. Don’t leave without tasting the Arranque Roteño, a local dish related to salmorejo, or sampling the well-known Moscatel wine.
-
When the tide goes out, you can spot the impressive fishing corrals, ancient stone structures of Roman and medieval origin used for natural fishing. Today, they are recognised as a Natural Monument.
-
And finally, the sunsets. Many say that the golden-sand sunsets of this part of Cádiz are among the most spectacular in the entire peninsula.
Cádiz: history, sea and Andalusian flavour in every corner
Cádiz is often referred to as the oldest city in Western Europe, and it certainly feels like a living history book by the sea. With its charming old town, golden beaches and relaxed pace, Cádiz is a great choice for both families and couples looking to explore a more authentic side of Andalusia.
Make sure you visit:
- The Cathedral of Cádiz and climb its tower for amazing panoramic views.
- The old town, full of narrow cobbled streets, lively plazas, and local shops.
- La Caleta Beach at sunset, an iconic spot where locals gather.
- Torre Tavira with its camera obscura experience for unique city views.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Playa de la Victoria: wide, clean and perfect for families.
- Playa de la Caleta: small, charming and right next to the city centre.
- Playa de Cortadura: more natural and quiet, ideal for those who enjoy space and peace.
- Playa Santa María del Mar: a favourite among locals for bodyboarding.
Family-Friendly activities:
- A boat trip around the Bay of Cádiz.
- A day at Genovés Park: green, shady, and great for a picnic.
- Visit the Puppet Museum, fun and unexpected.
- Explore the Castle of San Sebastián via the scenic coastal walk.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Fried fish platters (“pescaíto frito”), especially in local freidurías.
- “Tortillitas de camarones” (crispy shrimp fritters).
- Local cheeses and sherry from nearby Jerez.
- Artisan ice cream from historic heladerías in the old town.
Make the most of your visit and go to ...
- El Puerto de Santa María (20 km): great for wine tasting and riverside dining.
- San Fernando (15 km): a town rich in naval history.
- Vejer de la Frontera (55 km): a whitewashed hilltop village full of charm.
- Jerez de la Frontera (35 km): famous for its sherry, horses, and flamenco.

No big issues
Odour from toilet (probably a dry sink), curtains (for the nite) very used and damaged.
Very good
The cleanliness and upkeep of the communal areas leave a lot to be desired.
The all-inclusive is very limited; I do not recommend it.
The quadruple room is just a double with a worn sofa bed, where anyone over 30 kg cannot sleep.

The quality of the food was awful and the cleanliness of the rooms left a lot to be desired, especially the bathroom.
Too expensive for the level of service. They take advantage of having the water park, but of course people from outside who aren’t staying can enter and sometimes it gets far too crowded.

The only downside is that the quadruple rooms would be better with two large beds, because the sofa bed is quite uncomfortable to sleep on. For the price they charge, they could provide two beds.

The reception staff didn’t inform us about anything, they were completely lacking in empathy. They didn’t give us the room at the agreed time (latest 15:00h) and we didn’t get it until 15:45. We had Full Board and a very young child and the meals finished at 15:30h and we still didn’t have the room. Also they allow dogs in all the rooms and don’t reserve any for people allergic to dogs. They force you to vacate the room by 12:00h at the latest even though they didn’t give it to you at the agreed time and there were no apologies.

I had some doubts about check-in and check-out times, since the room is available from 15:00h on the first day. Coming from Madrid I arrived at the hotel at 16:15. The reception staff were super friendly and kindly offered me a complimentary meal as compensation on the last day for not having had it on the first. However, at the 12:00h check-out on the last day another receptionist told me this wasn’t the usual practice, although she honoured it. Also bear in mind that at check-out they take away the all-inclusive wristband and you can’t order anything else. That said, for the complimentary meal on the last day the manager was kind enough to keep our all-inclusive and not charge us for the drinks with the meal.
The hotel entertainment, while decent, could be a little better and more varied and interactive.

Very good
- Crowding at the evening shows; it’s hard to find a seat if you don’t go early.
- Many spots in the aquapark are occupied all day by towels with no one there and nobody removing them, so it’s obvious they’re being “reserved.”
- The Water Slides area is next to the hotel but open to the public; if a couple of excursion groups turn up there are endless queues.
- The aquapark closes at 18:45, and the hotel’s only pool is tiny, so there’s little to do between then and dinner.
- Room cleaning on 2 of the 3 days we stayed took place between 14:00 and 15:00h when we wanted to rest for a while, despite having left the room at 08:00.
- The all-inclusive only covers the three basic cocktails; you have to pay 50% for the rest. It also doesn’t include ice cream, and there’s no fruit at the pool bar — it only has pizza, crisps, nachos, donuts, soft drinks and little else.
- It’s not worth the price, at least the all-inclusive isn’t; the only advantage is you don’t have to queue to pay for lunch or dinner.
- It also makes little sense that despite having all-inclusive and the ID wristband, you still have to carry a little slip around the dining room where they mark the drinks you don’t have to pay for.
- The wristband has a chip to open the room, which would be a pro if it worked well, but of the three wristbands we had only one opened the door, and with great difficulty.
- There was no space in the hotel car park, although we could leave the car in the aquapark car park (€10/day); but it’s only open from 11:00 to 19:30h and outside those hours you have to “sneak out” through the pedestrian exit being careful not to scratch the car.

The snack bar and the blonde waitress were very unfriendly. We had the all-inclusive package, but at half past one, as the dining room is already open, they close the snack bar and won’t let you eat anything there. We wanted to eat there but they wouldn’t let us because the dining room was open…
There was an unbelievable queue just to order something, and if you don’t get there before half past one, you don’t get any food even after waiting 10 minutes in the queue, because only one person is serving and the place is packed.

Personally, as I get up early even if I don't want to, being able to have a coffee on the terrace while I wait for the rest of the family to wake up for breakfast is great. Maybe the bar could open a bit earlier, just to mention something.

The juices at breakfast could be much better :)

As the car park was full, we parked in the Aquafun car park. It cost 10 euros per day and the only security was when the water park closed, as the car park was then locked. Not great in this respect. One of the beds wasn’t very stable (1440).
