Destination

Gijón, a vibrant coastal city in northern Spain, is the perfect destination to experience the unique charm of Asturias. Situated on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón offers a blend of stunning beaches, rich cultural heritage and traditional Asturian gastronomy.

Beaches and coastal beauty:

  • Playa de San Lorenzo: The city's most famous beach, stretching along the coast with golden sands and fantastic views of the Cantabrian Sea. Perfect for swimming, surfing or just relaxing and enjoying the sea breeze.
  • Playa de Poniente: A smaller, family-friendly beach with calm waters and a nearby marina, ideal for a relaxing day by the sea.
  • Paseo del Muro: Stroll along the promenade that runs parallel to Playa de San Lorenzo, offering spectacular views of the coastline and Gijón's iconic skyline.

Cultural and Historical Highlights:

  • Cimavilla: Explore the city's oldest quarter, perched on a hill overlooking the sea. Its cobbled streets are full of historic charm, lively bars and cultural landmarks.
  • Elogio del Horizonte: A striking sculpture by Eduardo Chillida on Santa Catalina Hill. It offers breathtaking views of the sea and is one of Gijón's most famous landmarks.
  • Jovellano's Birthplace Museum: Discover the life and work of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, a key figure in the Spanish Enlightenment, at this museum housed in his former home.
  • Roman Baths of Campo Valdés: Step back in time and learn about Gijón's ancient history at these well-preserved Roman ruins, near the church of San Pedro.

Asturian Gastronomy:

  • Cachopo: A hearty Asturian dish of breaded veal stuffed with ham and cheese, perfect for sharing.
  • Fabada Asturiana: A traditional Asturian bean stew made with chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage) and pork, offering a true taste of the region.
  • Sidra (cider): No visit to Gijón is complete without tasting Asturian cider. Visit a local sidrería to see the unique pouring technique and enjoy it with tapas.
  • Arroz con Leche: A creamy rice pudding with a hint of cinnamon, a must-try Asturian dessert.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Acuario de Gijón: A fantastic aquarium where families can discover marine life from different ecosystems, from the Cantabrian Sea to tropical waters.
  • Jardín Botánico Atlántico: A stunning botanical garden showcasing the flora of the Atlantic region, with walks and educational exhibits.
  • Laboral Cultural Centre: An impressive cultural complex with interactive exhibits, workshops and a panoramic tower with views of the city and surrounding countryside.

Festivals and events:

  • Semana Grande: Held in August, this lively festival of concerts, parades and fireworks celebrates Gijón's culture and traditions.
  • Festival de la Sidra Natural: In September, celebrate Gijón's cider culture with tastings, competitions and demonstrations of cider making.

Best time to visit:

  • Spring (April - June): Perfect for enjoying the mild weather and exploring the city's green spaces.
  • Summer (July - September): Ideal for beach days, outdoor festivals and cultural events.
  • Autumn (October - November): A quieter time to enjoy the city's culinary delights and scenic beauty.
  • Winter (December - February): A quiet season to explore Gijón's cultural attractions with fewer crowds.

9.4 Marga Travelled with couple November 2024
