Curiosities of Aguadulce

Aguadulce has its name for a reason, and it’s not just a marketing idea from the 1960s. Discover some of the most fascinating facts that make this beautiful corner of Almería so special:

  • The mystery behind the name (water that isn’t salty)
It’s called Aguadulce because fresh water springs emerge right by the seashore. In the past, sailors took advantage of these natural filtrations from the Sierra de Gádor to refill their drinking water supplies without having to sail far from the coast.

  • The “Kilometre Zero” of Spanish tourism
Aguadulce is part of tourism history. In 1964 it was declared the first Centre of National Tourist Interest in Spain. In many ways, the modern sun-and-beach holiday model that we know today began right here.

  • A Hollywood base by the sea
Thanks to its proximity to Tabernas, Aguadulce, in Almería, became the perfect coastal base for Western film crews. Stars such as Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg stayed here while filming in the desert, seeking the refreshing sea breeze after long days under the intense heat.

  • The “shield” microclimate
Protected by the Sierra de Gádor, Aguadulce enjoys a unique microclimate. While strong Poniente or Levante winds may sweep across other parts of Almería, the sea here is often calmer and the air noticeably milder.

  • A hidden treasure beneath your feet: Ribera de la Algaida
Nearby lies the archaeological site of Turaniana, home to the remains of a Roman settlement. Even more remarkable is its Posidonia reef, one of the few natural monuments of its kind in the Mediterranean, forming an underwater ecosystem that helps keep the water exceptionally clear.

Almería: untouched beaches and cinematic scenery

Almería isn’t just another beach destination, it’s a unique blend of desert landscapes, traditional villages, and Mediterranean coastline. Ideal for families and couples seeking a sunny break with a taste of local culture, this corner of Andalusia is full of surprises.

Make sure you visit:

  • The Alcazaba of Almería: a massive Moorish fortress with panoramic views.
  • The old town of Níjar: known for pottery, textiles, and whitewashed charm.
  • Tabernas Desert: Europe’s only desert, used in countless western movies.
  • Cabo de Gata Natural Park: a protected area with dramatic cliffs and coves.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Genoveses Beach: wide, natural, and perfect for a peaceful day.
  • Mónsul Beach: famous for its volcanic rock formations and clear water.
  • Playa del Zapillo: right in Almería city, with all facilities nearby.
  • Aguadulce Beach: great for families with calm waters and playgrounds.

Family-Friendly activities:

  • Visit the MiniHollywood Theme Park in Tabernas, with shows and a zoo.
  • Take an easy hike through Cabo de Gata with stops at scenic viewpoints.
  • Try kayaking or snorkeling tours in crystal-clear waters.
  • Spend the evening strolling along the seaside promenade with ice cream.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Fried fish (“pescaíto frito”) in beachfront bars.
  • “Migas” and “gurullos”, two hearty traditional dishes.
  • Local tapas: order a drink and get a snack for free!
  • Artisan ice creams, perfect on a warm Almería evening.

Make the most of your visit and go to ...

  • Mojácar (1h drive): a hilltop village with stunning sea views.
  • Sorbas (40 min): explore the karst caves with guided tours.
  • Roquetas de Mar (30 min): offers a castle, aquarium, and a family-friendly beach.
  • Las Negras & San José: charming coastal towns within Cabo de Gata.

9.1 Rahana Travelled with couple May 2025
We stayed with only bed and breakfast. Room and hotel is clean. Did not use the pool or other facilities. The breakfast itself is fine
However the breakfast room it is not a Nice place to easy enjoy your breakfast. It is loud and crowded. It is my personal experience that I did not like this. Next time I would book without breakfast.
Superb
7.1 Marcos Travelled with couple October 2026 The sea views from the room
Las vistas al mar desde la habitación
The noise from the extractor fans all night means you can’t sleep. The buffet is very average for a four-star hotel.

8.3 Veronica Travelled with couple October 2026 The best things are the location, the views and the food.
The rooms need renovating; they’re a bit dated and already have several defects. Depending on where your room is, you can hear the noise from the kitchen extractor fans all day long.

Fabulous
3 Angel Travelled with couple October 2026 The only good things about the hotel are its location and the filtered water tap in the restaurant. Nothing else is worth mentioning.
Money down the drain on this holiday. The hotel looks like something out of a horror film. The beds were awful to sleep in (if you can even call it that), and the food was very poor with little choice. I wouldn’t say the staff were unfriendly, as that wouldn’t be true, but a smile and a bit of professionalism wouldn’t go amiss. Then again, they’re in keeping with the hotel. Facilities such as the spa were closed (it looked abandoned from the room). Perhaps it deserved its 4 stars 50 years ago, but now it’s a crime for it to have them—or an outright lie, to put it another way. It deserves 2 or even 3 fewer stars. If you don’t like throwing money away, don’t come to this hotel. The room windows were single-glazed and rattled in the wind, and you could hear everything… Anyway, I’d need pages to write down everything I think.

5.7 Jose Travelled with couple October 2026 The food was good.
Estaba bien la comida
It was a disaster. The TV didn’t work, nor did the phone, the water was murky when we tried to shower, the bathroom flooded and, to top it all off, the alarm went off both nights at 12.30.

6.6 Javier Travelled with  friends October 2026 Food was very limited in terms of variety and quality. There were leaks in reception, the rooms were poorly insulated, and the pipes were full of air, so the water came out cloudy. The hotel is very, very run-down; if you’re just passing through or have other plans outside the hotel, it’ll do.

8 Ana María Travelled with family October 2026 The hotel staff (the entertainment team’s Patricia and the lifeguard Ariadna were both lovely) and the food overall were very good, we loved the orange blossom shower gel, the location and the atmosphere. I’d come back, although more in summer.
If the pool is open the pool bar should be open too, and you shouldn’t have to walk across the whole hotel and go down three floors to use the all-inclusive. Also not being able to fill or have bottles of water, only cups, is inconvenient and a mess. The pillows are very soft.

Some areas are a little run-down, but it looks like they’re doing them up. The car park is a bit expensive too: €15 a day.

7.7 Anomimo Travelled with couple October 2026 The hotel's location
La ubicación del hotel
The so-called All-Inclusive was the worst I’ve experienced in more than 40 years of travelling on this type of package. To start with, they don’t give you your room until after 2 pm, which is when the All-Inclusive begins, so if you arrive earlier, as I did, you have to wait until then. To make matters worse, I asked for a small bottle of water and was told it wasn’t included in the All-Inclusive. When I complained because I didn’t think that was normal, the waiters told me to read the terms and conditions I’d agreed to before going places (their exact words). So I’d suggest Jump2spain.com provide this information, so you don’t end up looking as shocked as I did. They gave me a glass of water in a plastic cup, straight from the sink tap!!! Also, in the restaurant you’re not entitled to a slightly better wine: it’s the house wine, take it or leave it. You can ask for soft drinks and beer, though. The snack offering is a joke: in one corner of the bar there’s a tiny display cabinet with one pizza and a poor selection of pastries, and that’s it. All in all, the hotel and the food are good, but some of the waiters and the All-Inclusive have spoiled part of my holiday. So read everything before booking, to avoid any surprises.

Those of us with coeliac disease have certain difficulties that could be better addressed with a bit of organisation, such as isolating or grouping all the gluten-free foods on one table, or placing them in areas separate from those contaminated with gluten.
