Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Aguadulce
Aguadulce has its name for a reason, and it’s not just a marketing idea from the 1960s. Discover some of the most fascinating facts that make this beautiful corner of Almería so special:
-
The mystery behind the name (water that isn’t salty)
It’s called Aguadulce because fresh water springs emerge right by the seashore. In the past, sailors took advantage of these natural filtrations from the Sierra de Gádor to refill their drinking water supplies without having to sail far from the coast. -
The “Kilometre Zero” of Spanish tourism
Aguadulce is part of tourism history. In 1964 it was declared the first Centre of National Tourist Interest in Spain. In many ways, the modern sun-and-beach holiday model that we know today began right here. -
A Hollywood base by the sea
Thanks to its proximity to Tabernas, Aguadulce, in Almería, became the perfect coastal base for Western film crews. Stars such as Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg stayed here while filming in the desert, seeking the refreshing sea breeze after long days under the intense heat. -
The “shield” microclimate
Protected by the Sierra de Gádor, Aguadulce enjoys a unique microclimate. While strong Poniente or Levante winds may sweep across other parts of Almería, the sea here is often calmer and the air noticeably milder. -
A hidden treasure beneath your feet: Ribera de la Algaida
Nearby lies the archaeological site of Turaniana, home to the remains of a Roman settlement. Even more remarkable is its Posidonia reef, one of the few natural monuments of its kind in the Mediterranean, forming an underwater ecosystem that helps keep the water exceptionally clear.

Almería: untouched beaches and cinematic scenery
Almería isn’t just another beach destination, it’s a unique blend of desert landscapes, traditional villages, and Mediterranean coastline. Ideal for families and couples seeking a sunny break with a taste of local culture, this corner of Andalusia is full of surprises.
Make sure you visit:
- The Alcazaba of Almería: a massive Moorish fortress with panoramic views.
- The old town of Níjar: known for pottery, textiles, and whitewashed charm.
- Tabernas Desert: Europe’s only desert, used in countless western movies.
- Cabo de Gata Natural Park: a protected area with dramatic cliffs and coves.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Genoveses Beach: wide, natural, and perfect for a peaceful day.
- Mónsul Beach: famous for its volcanic rock formations and clear water.
- Playa del Zapillo: right in Almería city, with all facilities nearby.
- Aguadulce Beach: great for families with calm waters and playgrounds.
Family-Friendly activities:
- Visit the MiniHollywood Theme Park in Tabernas, with shows and a zoo.
- Take an easy hike through Cabo de Gata with stops at scenic viewpoints.
- Try kayaking or snorkeling tours in crystal-clear waters.
- Spend the evening strolling along the seaside promenade with ice cream.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Fried fish (“pescaíto frito”) in beachfront bars.
- “Migas” and “gurullos”, two hearty traditional dishes.
- Local tapas: order a drink and get a snack for free!
- Artisan ice creams, perfect on a warm Almería evening.
Make the most of your visit and go to ...
- Mojácar (1h drive): a hilltop village with stunning sea views.
- Sorbas (40 min): explore the karst caves with guided tours.
- Roquetas de Mar (30 min): offers a castle, aquarium, and a family-friendly beach.
- Las Negras & San José: charming coastal towns within Cabo de Gata.

We stayed with only bed and breakfast. Room and hotel is clean. Did not use the pool or other facilities. The breakfast itself is fine
However the breakfast room it is not a Nice place to easy enjoy your breakfast. It is loud and crowded. It is my personal experience that I did not like this. Next time I would book without breakfast.
Excellent
El persona muy agradable.
All the pools are covered, the rooms are old, with raised wood and ants, the food is rather average, and the entertainment isn’t bad, although there isn’t much for children.

Good
Muy buena ubicación, personal muy agradable.
I didn’t like being left without the last lunch that belonged to me; no one told me that if we didn’t have lunch at check-in, they wouldn’t let me have it on the day of departure. I explained that no one alerted us and that we were coming from far away, with frozen meals for our babies, and it would have been convenient to be able to heat it up until the very last day there. But nothing changes.

Perhaps during peak season, when the hotel is full, it isn’t advisable to go down to dinner “very late” because it gets fully booked.

For example, the pool schedule; it opens at 11:00 and closes at 19:30h. It feels a bit tight considering how long the days are, especially in June.

The pool bar only opens at weekends and closes at 6pm. The hairdryer in the room is very old and hardly blows any air. I recommend bringing one from home. The buffet food was well cooked but, for me, it lacked more variety of meats and fish.

I found everything excellent except the all-inclusive offering, as it was a bit misleading (it’s frustrating that we don’t have the right to water because it’s no longer on the all-inclusive list). Now you have to buy a bottle, and the price is €2.50.

The rooms are very old, and the bathtub, for me, who has mobility problems in one foot, scared me to shower there, so I would avoid using it.

Only the meals issue: guests always go at the first hour and queues form, because if you’re not careful there won’t be any food left.

The dining room would need more toasters and water/coffee machines to avoid queues and improve flow.
There are small faults in the rooms that give a bad impression.

Poorly located pools, small with an unusual design, and the spa is closed!! The "gardens" and outdoor spaces require a complete overhaul.

The food is BAD, scarce, with a queue to enter the dining room; food like at home or worse, everything is very repetitive, cheap things such as sausages, breast fillets, secret or rib fillet, and frozen hake, Argentine shark, or low-quality fish, and it all runs out very quickly... I’m not repeating myself. The pool closes at 6 pm, embarrassing... I stayed 5 days and I felt like going home. A lot of retirees in June.
