Fornells: The crystal clear refuge of Menorca

Fornells is not just a village, it’s a way of life. Famous for its sailing culture and gastronomy, it’s the favourite spot for travellers looking for that authentic Menorca that seems untouched by time.

  • The secret to enjoying Caldereta without overspending Everyone knows that Fornells is home to one of the best lobster Calderetas in the world, it’s even the favourite dish of Spain’s former king whenever he visits the island. If lobster is beyond your budget, don’t worry. Order a fish rice dish or a traditional “frit de marisc” at one of the restaurants hidden in the inner streets instead of those facing the harbour. The flavour is just as authentic and much friendlier on your wallet.

  • The bay: a 5 kilometre natural swimming pool The bay of Fornells is so sheltered that its waters remain calm almost all the time. It’s the ideal place for those who are nervous about the sea or travelling with children.

Our recommendation: don’t just stay in the village. Rent a kayak or a boat without a licence and head towards the untouched coves on the other side of the bay, such as Cala Cabra Salada, where you can still enjoy peace and quiet even in the middle of August.

  • La Torre de Fornells: postcard worthy views This is one of the largest British defence towers on the island. The climb is easy and the views from the top are spectacular: the entire north coast of Menorca, the Cavalleria lighthouse in the distance and the endless Mediterranean Sea.

It’s one of the best places to watch the sunset away from the crowds around the lighthouse.

  • Salinas de la Concepción Just before reaching the village, you’ll spot several stretches of water. These are the salt flats.

They still produce the famous Flor de Sal de Menorca. You can visit the estate and buy some directly there.

It’s the perfect souvenir: affordable, easy to carry and a delicious piece of Menorca to take home.

  • Looking for a beach? Head to Cala Tirant Fornells is a harbour village, so there’s no sandy beach right in the centre.

Only 5 minutes away by car, or after a pleasant coastal walk, you’ll reach Cala Tirant. A wide beach with fine golden sand surrounded by dunes, typical of northern Menorca and perfect for days when the Tramontana wind stays away.

  • A sweet stop at La Palma As you stroll along the harbour, you’ll come across a pastry shop called La Palma.

Our tip: try their “pastissets” (traditional flower shaped pastries) or order an ensaimada to take away. It’s the oldest pastry shop in town and the irresistible smell of butter and sugar will lead you straight to the door.

Don’t miss this! If you want to experience local life at its most authentic, head to the harbour in the late afternoon when the traditional “llaüts” boats return with the catch of the day. Watching the fishermen unload fresh fish directly into the restaurant kitchens is a true Menorcan spectacle.

Menorca: your perfect island escape of calm, nature and charm

Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, located to the north-east of Mallorca. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island is famous for its crystal clear waters, hidden coves, whitewashed villages and relaxed atmosphere. Less developed than its sister islands, Menorca is ideal for families, nature lovers and travellers seeking peace and authenticity.

Make sure you visit:

  • Ciutadella de Menorca: The former capital of the island, with narrow streets, Gothic churches and a lovely harbour, perfect for evening strolls.
  • Mahon (Maó): The current capital, known for its natural harbour (one of the largest in the world), Georgian buildings and local markets.
  • Naveta des Tudons: A well-preserved prehistoric burial site dating back over 3,000 years.
  • Monte Toro: The highest point on the island, with panoramic views and a peaceful sanctuary at the top.
  • Fort Marlborough: An 18th century fort built by the British into the cliffs near the port of Mahón.

Beaches we think you'll like:

  • Cala en Porter: Sheltered cove with calm waters and easy access, excellent for young children.
  • Cala Macarella & Cala Macarelleta: Two of Menorca's most iconic beaches, with turquoise waters, fine white sand and dramatic cliffs.
  • Cala Mitjana: Surrounded by pine forests, this beach is perfect for a relaxing day in a natural setting.
  • Cala Galdana: A family-friendly beach with shallow waters and nearby restaurants and facilities.
  • Son Bou beach: The longest beach on the island, ideal for sunbathing, water sports and long walks along the shore.
  • Cala Pregonda: A stunning beach with red-golden sand and crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkelling.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Caldereta de langosta: Lobster stew, particularly famous in the town of Fornells.
  • Queso de Mahón: A cheese with a Denomination of Origin, ranging from soft to mature, often served with olive oil and paprika.
  • Oliaigua: A traditional vegetable soup, originally eaten by peasants and often served cold.
  • Gin Xoriguer: Menorca's signature gin, best enjoyed with lemon soda in the popular "pomada" drink.

Make the most of your visit and go to ...

  • Fornells: A charming fishing village famous for its lobster stew and sea excursions.
  • Binibeca Vell: A picturesque village of white houses and narrow streets, ideal for photography and seafood lunches.
  • Cova d'en Xoroi: A natural cave bar built into a cliff with stunning sunset views over the sea.
  • Es Grau and S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park: An area of protected wetlands perfect for birdwatching, kayaking and easy walks.
  • Alaior: A quiet inland town known for its cheese production and craft markets.

Ubicación
It is not a 4*, not even a 3*, so we felt cheated. I do not recommend it, unless you are looking for something in that range. It has a great lack of maintenance of the bedrooms and facilities, and of updating them.
No es un 4*, ni tan siquiera un 3*, por lo que nos sentimos engañados. No lo aconsejo, salvo que busques algo de esa categoria. Tiene una gran falta de mantenimiento de las habitaciones e instalaciones, y de actualización de las mismas.

6.6 Francis Travelled with couple September 2020 Quiet location, well insulated room, easy car park. Swimming pool very clean and well maintained.
Ubicación tranquila, habitación bien aislada, facilidad de aparcamiento. Piscina muy limpia y cuidada.
The cleanliness of the room. Being that it is supposed to be a 4 key aparthotel, and they should clean like in a hotel, they told us at reception that they only clean once in the middle of the stay; we stayed 7 days and on the fifth day they only left new towels, without cleaning anything else. The toaster did not work. They changed it on the third day and gave us another one that made the apartment light go off...on the fifth day they finally changed it for a ufesa brand one that worked properly. If it wasn't for the cleanliness, we would rate the stay much better. I think it is a very important aspect

10 Leticia Travelled with couple August 2020 Very happy with the experience. Apartments with even better presence than in the photos. The beds and sofa bed comfortable, spacious room and living room, all very clean, with beautiful sea views. The only negative thing is that the terrace was always full of wasps, and the lawn was a bit dry, but everything else great. Highly recommended.
