Why this destination is a must-visit
Fornells: The crystal clear refuge of Menorca
Fornells is not just a village, it’s a way of life. Famous for its sailing culture and gastronomy, it’s the favourite spot for travellers looking for that authentic Menorca that seems untouched by time.
-
The secret to enjoying Caldereta without overspending Everyone knows that Fornells is home to one of the best lobster Calderetas in the world, it’s even the favourite dish of Spain’s former king whenever he visits the island. If lobster is beyond your budget, don’t worry. Order a fish rice dish or a traditional “frit de marisc” at one of the restaurants hidden in the inner streets instead of those facing the harbour. The flavour is just as authentic and much friendlier on your wallet.
-
The bay: a 5 kilometre natural swimming pool The bay of Fornells is so sheltered that its waters remain calm almost all the time. It’s the ideal place for those who are nervous about the sea or travelling with children.
Our recommendation: don’t just stay in the village. Rent a kayak or a boat without a licence and head towards the untouched coves on the other side of the bay, such as Cala Cabra Salada, where you can still enjoy peace and quiet even in the middle of August.
- La Torre de Fornells: postcard worthy views This is one of the largest British defence towers on the island. The climb is easy and the views from the top are spectacular: the entire north coast of Menorca, the Cavalleria lighthouse in the distance and the endless Mediterranean Sea.
It’s one of the best places to watch the sunset away from the crowds around the lighthouse.
- Salinas de la Concepción Just before reaching the village, you’ll spot several stretches of water. These are the salt flats.
They still produce the famous Flor de Sal de Menorca. You can visit the estate and buy some directly there.
It’s the perfect souvenir: affordable, easy to carry and a delicious piece of Menorca to take home.
- Looking for a beach? Head to Cala Tirant Fornells is a harbour village, so there’s no sandy beach right in the centre.
Only 5 minutes away by car, or after a pleasant coastal walk, you’ll reach Cala Tirant. A wide beach with fine golden sand surrounded by dunes, typical of northern Menorca and perfect for days when the Tramontana wind stays away.
- A sweet stop at La Palma As you stroll along the harbour, you’ll come across a pastry shop called La Palma.
Our tip: try their “pastissets” (traditional flower shaped pastries) or order an ensaimada to take away. It’s the oldest pastry shop in town and the irresistible smell of butter and sugar will lead you straight to the door.
Don’t miss this! If you want to experience local life at its most authentic, head to the harbour in the late afternoon when the traditional “llaüts” boats return with the catch of the day. Watching the fishermen unload fresh fish directly into the restaurant kitchens is a true Menorcan spectacle.

Menorca: your perfect island escape of calm, nature and charm
Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, located to the north-east of Mallorca. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island is famous for its crystal clear waters, hidden coves, whitewashed villages and relaxed atmosphere. Less developed than its sister islands, Menorca is ideal for families, nature lovers and travellers seeking peace and authenticity.

Beaches we think you'll like:

- Cala Mitjana: Surrounded by pine forests, this beach is perfect for a relaxing day in a natural setting.
- Cala Galdana: A family-friendly beach with shallow waters and nearby restaurants and facilities.
- Son Bou beach: The longest beach on the island, ideal for sunbathing, water sports and long walks along the shore.
- Cala Pregonda: A stunning beach with red-golden sand and crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkelling.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Caldereta de langosta: Lobster stew, particularly famous in the town of Fornells.
- Queso de Mahón: A cheese with a Denomination of Origin, ranging from soft to mature, often served with olive oil and paprika.
- Oliaigua: A traditional vegetable soup, originally eaten by peasants and often served cold.
