Curiosities of Manises
Manises is much more than the place where you land when travelling to Valencia. It’s a city shaped by clay and fire, with a history that even reaches the Vatican.
Here are some of the most surprising curiosities about Manises:
- The “official supplier” of the Popes
During the 14th and 15th centuries, Manises ceramics were among the most desired luxury objects in Europe. Their prestige was such that Popes Alexander VI and Eugene IV ordered tiles from Manises to pave the famous Borgia Rooms in the Vatican. It was common to find Manises pieces in the courts of Naples and in the homes of Europe’s highest nobility.
- The only UNESCO Creative City of its kind in Spain
In 2021, Manises was named a UNESCO Creative City in the category of Crafts and Folk Arts. It is the first and only city in Spain with this title in this category, recognising more than 700 years of uninterrupted ceramic tradition.
- A unique “golden” dome
The Church of San Juan Bautista hides a remarkable treasure: its dome is covered with golden metallic-lustre tiles, a ceramic technique of Arab origin perfected in Manises. When sunlight hits it, the dome shines so brightly that it can be seen from kilometres away.
- The Ceramic Parade, watch your head!
Every 18 July, Manises celebrates a truly unique parade. Instead of throwing sweets, participants on the floats hand out ceramic pieces to the crowd. Plates, vases and pots fly through the air in a tradition dating back to 1900. It may be the only parade in the world where you can return home with a new dinner set.
- The airport that isn’t where people think
Although everyone knows it as Valencia Airport, it is actually located within the municipality of Manises. Originally, it was planned for the Albufera area, but the ground was too marshy. Manises was chosen for its firm soil, perfect for ceramic kilns and for aircraft runways.
- The avenue of ceramic murals
A walk along Avenida Blasco Ibáñez reveals something unusual: large ceramic panels on the walls illustrating the works of writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Look closely at the doorframes of the historic houses in the old centre as well, many still feature hand-painted tiles telling the story of the families who once lived there.
