Why this destination is a must-visit

The Mar Menor is a coastal saltwater lagoon located in the Region of Murcia in south-eastern Spain. Known for its calm, shallow waters and high mineral content, it's often described as Europe's largest open-air spa. A favourite with families, water sports enthusiasts and wellness seekers, the Mar Menor offers a unique blend of relaxation, nature and outdoor fun.

Top attractions

  • Infanta Cristina High Performance Centre: A renowned training facility for elite athletes, especially those involved in water sports such as sailing and rowing.
  • San Pedro del Pinatar Salt Flats: A beautiful natural park, ideal for birdwatching, especially flamingos, and for walking or cycling among salt flats and dunes.
  • La Manga Marina: A lively harbour area with restaurants, shops and boat hire, perfect for a lunch by the sea or a drink at sunset.
  • Mud baths at Lo Pagán: The area's natural mud is believed to have therapeutic properties for the skin and joints - fun and free to try!
  • Roman ruins of Cartagena (30 mins away): Explore ancient Roman theatres and archaeological museums in one of Spain's most historic cities.

Best Beaches in Murcia

  • Los Narejos Beach: One of the most popular beaches on the Mar Menor - shallow, calm waters and excellent facilities, perfect for families.
  • Playa de la Puntica (Lo Pagán): A family-friendly beach with fine sand, beach bars and pedal boat hire.
  • Playa de las Palmeras: Known for its natural beauty and warm, safe waters, ideal for young children.
  • Playa de La Manga (Mediterranean side): Just across the strip from the lagoon, offering bigger waves and a change of scenery.
  • Playa de Santiago de la Ribera: A quiet, local beach with clean waters and a relaxed atmosphere.

Family Friendly Activities

  • Safe swimming everywhere: The lagoon's warm, shallow waters make it one of the safest places for children to swim in Spain.
  • Water sports galore: Try sailing, paddle boarding, windsurfing or kayaking - many schools offer beginners' tuition.
  • Walk or cycle along the promenade: Many towns around the Mar Menor have well-maintained promenades.
  • Mini golf and playgrounds: Can be found in towns such as Los Alcázares and La Manga.
  • Boat trips on the Mar Menor: A fun way to explore the area from the water, often with stops for a swim.

Local Gastronomy

  • Caldero del Mar Menor: A traditional rice dish cooked in fish stock, usually served with alioli - simple but full of flavour.
  • Marineras: A local tapa of Russian salad on a breadstick with anchovies - a Murcian favourite.
  • Grilled fish and seafood: Freshly caught from the lagoon and the nearby Mediterranean.
  • Pastel de Cierva: A unique Murcian pastry with sweet dough and a savoury chicken filling.
  • Local Wines and Beers: Try Murcia's regional wines and craft beers, often served in local beach bars and chiringuitos.

Day trips & nearby attractions

  • Cartagena (30 mins): Discover a wealth of Roman history, beautiful harbour and shopping streets.
  • Murcia City (45 mins): A cultural gem with a baroque cathedral, lively tapas bars and charming squares.
  • Cabo de Palos (20 mins): Visit this fishing village and iconic lighthouse and enjoy some of the best seafood in the region.
  • Calblanque Regional Park (30 mins): A natural paradise with unspoilt beaches and hiking trails.
  • Sierra Espuña Nature Reserve (1.5 hours): A little further inland, but great for a day of hiking, forest walks and mountain air.

The food needs to have some changes of different style.
Excellent
8.9 Clarissa June 2024
The staff were great. The room upgrade was great. The food at dinner was lovely, hot and varied. Housekeeping every day. Not too overcrowded around the pool, although we werent there at a busy time.
Our room was a family room with a kitchenette, but there was nothing in it - there was an explanation about why, but it was a shame. Breakfast was a bit boring - I know a lot of people say this, but I felt there could have been a scope for a bigger variety.
Very good

The room given was spacious, clean and comfortable altough the bed could have a more rigid mattress for me. We took the full board and were surprised by the good quality and variety offered at the buffet. Drinks also served at really affordable prices. Friendly staff. It was a good experience overall regardless of the amount of families around.
The cons were the beach (not the best one for me but can be great for kids) and the swimming pool that was too small and dominated by children playing, obviously due to holiday season.
Excellent
