Destination

The north of Gran Canaria offers a more authentic and lush side of the island, far from the bustling resorts of the south. With its green valleys, charming villages, volcanic landscapes and dramatic cliffs, the north is ideal for those seeking to experience nature, culture and local traditions.

Top attractions:

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: the island’s capital boasts a vibrant old town (Vegueta), museums, shops and city beaches such as Las Canteras.
  • Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo: Spain’s largest botanical garden, showcasing native Canarian flora in a stunning natural setting.
  • Arucas: This town is known for its impressive neo-Gothic church and the Arehucas rum distillery, where guided tours and tastings are available.
  • Firgas: This picturesque town is famous for its flowing water staircase and ceramic tile decorations representing the Canary Islands.
  • Teror: This charming pilgrimage town is renowned for its traditional Canarian balconies and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine.

Best beaches:

  • Playa de Las Canteras (Las Palmas): This long urban beach has calm waters, golden sand and a natural reef, making it ideal for snorkelling and family fun.
  • Playa del Puertillo (Arucas): A quiet, volcanic-sand beach popular with locals, boasting natural pools and stunning vistas.
  • Playa de San Felipe: A wild beach with strong waves, it is ideal for experienced surfers and those seeking a more untouched setting.
  • Charco de San Lorenzo (Moya): Natural saltwater pools that are protected from the waves and are perfect for swimming with children.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Poema del Mar Aquarium (Las Palmas): One of Europe’s most modern aquariums, it is home to sharks, rays and colourful marine ecosystems.
  • The Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología is an interactive science museum with hands-on exhibits, which are ideal for curious children.
  • Natural pools in Agaete and Moya: Safe swimming spots that are perfect for children and offer a relaxing alternative to the beach.
  • Hiking trails in the Doramas Forest: Gentle hikes through laurel forests and scenic viewpoints suitable for families.

Local Gastronomy:

  • Papas arrugadas con mojo: Salt-crusted local potatoes served with spicy or herby Canarian sauces.
  • Queso de Flor de Guía: A unique, slightly tangy cheese made with vegetable rennet and typical of the north.
  • Fresh fish and limpets: Often grilled and served with mojo verde in coastal villages such as Agaete and San Felipe.
  • Bienmesabe is a sweet dessert made from almonds, honey and cinnamon which is perfect served with ice cream.
  • Ron Miel: A local honey rum that you will find in bars and shops and which is often served as a digestive.

Nearby attractions:

  • Agaete Valley: This lush valley is home to coffee plantations, banana groves and charming trails, making it ideal for a scenic day trip.
  • Roque Nublo (central island): Although not technically in the north, this iconic symbol of Gran Canaria is well worth a visit and is about an hour's drive inland.
  • Gáldar: Home to the Painted Cave (Cueva Pintada), an important archaeological site featuring pre-Hispanic art and ruins.
  • Guía: A peaceful village renowned for its cheese, historic streets and local markets.
  • Bandama Caldera: A massive volcanic crater offering panoramic views and trails around its edge, easily accessible from the north.

Quedamos encantados con todo. El agua, café y té de la habitación estaban incluidos en el precio.
Por poner algo, que había obras en la entrada y que el jacuzzi estaba fuera de servicio.

7.3 Victor August 2024 The attention of the reception staff
La atención del personal de recepción
The breakfast we thought it was going to be in the hotel, when we were surprised that it was in a place next door, which surprised us. We were offered a breakfast of very little quantity and quality. The toast was burnt, the orange juice was supposedly natural, it was from a can and finally the waiter brought us orders that did not correspond to what we ordered.
