Destination

Mengíbar is a small, historic town in the province of Jaén in Andalusia. It is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and tranquil charm. Surrounded by olive groves and close to some of the region's most iconic attractions, it is the perfect destination for a peaceful getaway with a touch of history.

Top attractions

  • Mengíbar Tower (Torre de Mengíbar): This medieval tower is the symbol of the town and dates back to the Islamic period, offering insight into the area's past.
  • Archaeological Museum: Located in the town hall, it displays artefacts from the Iberian, Roman and medieval periods that have been discovered in the region.
  • Church of San Pedro Apóstol: This beautiful 18^(th)-century church features baroque elements and impressive altarpieces.
  • The Roman Bridge of Mengíbar: This ancient structure crosses the Guadalquivir River and offers a peaceful spot for walks and views.

Best beaches

  • Mengíbar is inland, so there are no beaches in the town itself. However, you can enjoy the riverside or take day trips to nearby natural parks with bathing spots.
  • River Guadalquivir access points: The local natural areas along the river are ideal for short hikes or picnics.
  • Jaén’s Green Pools (Charcas Verdes): These natural pools are located in the Sierra de Cazorla, about 90 minutes away, and are perfect for a refreshing dip in summer.

Family-friendly activities

  • Local parks and playgrounds: The small, quiet green spaces in the town are ideal for younger children.
  • Cultural workshops and festivities: Traditional events such as the summer fair or historical re-enactments are enjoyable and educational for families.
  • A visit to nearby Jaén: The city offers museums, a castle and panoramic views from Santa Catalina Hill.

Local Gastronomy

  • Andalusian tapas: Enjoy classics such as flamenquín, migas and berenjenas con miel (fried aubergines with honey).
  • Extra virgin olive oil: Jaén is the olive oil capital of the world — taste it fresh or buy it directly from local cooperatives.
  • Gazpacho and salmorejo: Refreshing cold soups, ideal in summer.
  • Local sweets: Traditional desserts such as roscos de vino and pestiños are commonly enjoyed during festivities.
  • Choto al ajillo is a local goat dish seasoned with garlic and typical of rural Andalusian cuisine.

Nearby attractions

  • Úbeda and Baeza: UNESCO-listed Renaissance towns located about 40 minutes away, rich in architecture, history and culture.

  • Cástulo Archaeological Site (Linares): An ancient Iberian and Roman city featuring mosaics, ruins and a small museum.

8.9 Esther Travelled with couple May 2025 The house Palace, enjoy its lounges, rooms, terraces ... The staff very friendly.
At breakfast, the scrambled eggs were in a bowl covered with a white napkin. I missed more fruit other than apples, pears and oranges. No yogurts without added sugar. Lots of pastries

9.4 Laura May 2025 The hotel is very nice. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. Spa is small but clean and very quiet. The Spa is small but clean and very quiet. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and we can't say anything else but that it was exceptional, particularly the dinner, quality food, good presentation and the attention of the staff of 10.

1 Marta Travelled with couple May 2025 The girl at the reception and the gardener. The only positive thing
Spa, half of it was not working and dirty. The girl left and was never heard from again, something happens to you and so what? Breakfast excaso, nothing hot and the waitress with the mobile and not even indicate us how to make us coffee. Mosquitoes in the room, broken, neglected. A pity. I do not recommend it

6.3 Junco Travelled with couple May 2025 To highlight how beautiful the hotel is its surroundings, the room is large and beautiful, along with the bathroom which is also nice. Mengíbar is a large town and its church is beautiful. It is also close to Jaén worth seeing, Úbeda and Baeza beautiful too.has free parking at the door del.hotel is not very big but it's fine.
To improve the mattresses, that detracts a lot a 4 * hotel should not have mattresses like that, older impossible. And the breakfast is of poor quality, industrial pastries, cold cuts, but no hot dishes. The fruit is scarce and of poor quality. And the village bread, which was the best, one of the days we were told that it had run out and they didn't replace it. The fried and scrambled eggs were made by the waitress if you asked her, but nothing else. There were no cooks in the morning. And the spa, which is super coquettish, doesn't work at all, a pity really. It needs maintenance because it is not even a 3*.

9.7 Juan Manuel Travelled with couple April 2025 What I liked most was the tranquility of the establishment and the friendliness of the staff.
Perhaps the SPA needs more maintenance. The pools were at different temperatures and neither the sauna nor the hamman were working.
