Why this destination is a must-visit
Discover Valongo: nature, legend and flavour just outside Porto
Are you looking for an authentic holiday in northern Portugal? Discover Valongo, a fascinating destination where ancient history, untamed nature and living traditions come together to offer you an unforgettable experience.
Explore the majestic Santa Justa and Pias mountain ranges and travel back in time. Walk across an ancient prehistoric ocean rich in giant trilobite fossils and delve into the mysterious underground galleries of the Roman Empire, remnants of a historic gold rush.
Feel the soul of this land through the art of lousa, slate craft, and be seduced by the unmistakable aroma of traditional bakeries. Valongo is the celebrated home of regueifa and traditional biscuits, crunchy delights that win over everyone who tastes them.
Hiking trails, subterranean mysteries, local gastronomy and the warmest hospitality await you in a magical setting.
Come to Valongo and discover this corner of northern Portugal!
Porto is a city best discovered at an unhurried pace, with the Douro glinting below steep streets and colourful old houses. Its maritime spirit, layered history and lively food scene make it a lovely choice for a couple’s city break or a family holiday with plenty to explore.
Begin your day with a riverside stroll, pause for coffee and something sweet, then watch the light change over the water as evening approaches. Porto has grand landmarks, but some of its happiest moments come from simply wandering its lanes and finding a terrace with a view.
Make sure you visit:
Start in Ribeira, the riverside quarter where bright façades line the Douro and cafés spill into the narrow streets. From here, a boat holiday offers a fresh perspective on the city and its six bridges, a relaxed way to take in the riverfront, especially on a sunny afternoon.
Head uphill to the Cathedral and continue to Torre dos Clérigos, whose high viewpoint rewards the climb with sweeping city views. Nearby, the celebrated Livraria Lello draws visitors for its ornate interior, while Igreja de São Francisco makes a striking contrast: its Gothic exterior gives little hint of the richly gilded decoration inside.
Family-friendly activities:
A boat ride on the Douro is an easy outing for different ages, with the bridges and changing river views keeping the journey engaging for children and grown-ups alike. For another ride through the city, take a classic tram and enjoy the streets from a seat by the window.
At World of Discoveries, interactive exhibits bring Portugal’s seafaring history to life, making it a good choice for curious young travellers. When everyone needs a calmer stretch of the day, the gardens of Palácio de Cristal offer room to wander and relax, with lovely views across the river.
Local delicacies you have to try:
Porto’s cooking is generous and full of flavour. Sit down for a francesinha, a substantial sandwich filled with meat and charcuterie, topped with melted cheese and served with a spicy sauce; it is a satisfying choice after a day spent walking the hills.
Cod appears in many local preparations, while holidayas à moda do Porto is a traditional dish with a long place in the city’s food culture. For a sweet pause, order a freshly baked pastel de nata at Manteigaria, ideally with a coffee between sightseeing stops.
Make the most of your visit:
Porto also makes a rewarding base for exploring northern Portugal. Set aside a day for one of these holidays, whether you are drawn to medieval streets, grand religious architecture or vineyard scenery.
- Guimarães (about 55 minutes by car): Explore the medieval castle and cobbled streets of a city regarded as the birthplace of Portugal.
- Braga (about 55 minutes by car): Visit the striking sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte and enjoy the city’s historic atmosphere.
- Aveiro (about 1 hour by car): Discover the canals and seaside character of the city often called the Portuguese Venice.
- Douro Valley (about 1 hour 30 minutes by car): Take in terraced vineyards and wineries associated with the region’s celebrated port wine.
