Why this destination is a must-visit

Curiosities of Guardamar del Segura

Guardamar del Segura is the place where 19th-century engineering quite literally saved a town from being swallowed by the desert.

The Town That Almost Disappeared Under the Sand

By the late 19th century, shifting dunes were advancing between 2 and 8 metres per year, threatening to bury Guardamar entirely. The solution? A visionary project led by engineer Francisco Mira, who planted more than 600,000 trees — pines, palms and eucalyptus — across 800 hectares. The result is today’s stunning Pinada de Guardamar, a vast green barrier that still protects the town.

The Roof of Spain (And It’s Military)

Forget skyscrapers in Benidorm. The tallest structure on the Iberian Peninsula is right here: the Torre de los Americanos, also known as Torreta de Guardamar. Standing 375 metres high — taller than the Eiffel Tower — it was built by the U.S. Navy in 1962 to communicate with submarines.

A “Lady” with a Powerful Story

If you know the Lady of Elche, meet her “cousin”: the Lady of Guardamar. Discovered in 1987 at the Cabezo Lucero archaeological site, she was found shattered into more than 50 fragments. After meticulous restoration, she became one of the most important symbols of Iberian art.

The Caliphal Rábita: One of a Kind

Hidden beneath the dunes lay an extraordinary treasure: the only almost-intact Islamic monastic complex (Rábita) from the Umayyad period preserved in Spain. Dating back to the 10th century, it was discovered during the very reforestation works that stopped the dunes.

The Prawn with a “Coloured Tail”

The famous Guardamar prawn stands out not only for its exceptional quality, but for its striking tricolour tail in shades of purple, red and yellow. Paired with the local ñora — a small pepper dried directly on the dune sands — it forms the golden duo of the town’s gastronomy.

Did You Know…?

Every 31 January, Guardamar celebrates the Fiesta del Árbol, a tradition dating back to 1902. Local children continue planting trees each year, honouring the forest that saved — and still protects — their town.

  • Arroz a Banda: A delicious rice dish cooked with seafood, a local specialty you'll find at many coastal restaurants.

7.1 Esther Travelled with couple May 2026 The rooms are equipped with everything you need and are well air-conditioned. I think it’s a good place to stay for a few days with the family.
The spa isn’t worth it. It’s a swimming pool with a few jets that are a bit unpleasantly powerful. Breakfast was a bit limited.

Very good
6 Sonia Travelled with family April 2026 The best thing was the service; everyone was very friendly. Children eat for free at the buffet, too. It’s very affordable, and the food is quite good.
I didn’t like Casa Creta. It was quite old and smelled really bad. You have to pay to use the indoor pool, and it’s freezing cold. On top of that, the roof is open. On a cold day, if you can’t use the outdoor pool, it’s not worth paying for the indoor one either. The jacuzzi next to it, on the other hand, is boiling hot, but children aren’t allowed in, so you end up having to stay in the freezing indoor pool. The trampolines are really old, much like the rest of the facilities, and you have to queue for ages; if you don’t get there in time, the children won’t get to jump. The house was more expensive on Jump2spain.com than on the website. Our friends booked a cabin for 6 that was better and cheaper.

2.2 M Carmen Travelled with family April 2026 Our stay at this resort was an absolute disaster. There is a large-scale construction site right next to the resort, with heavy machinery that starts up at 7.30 am and doesn’t stop until mid-afternoon. Neither the resort nor Busco un deal informed us about this situation at any point. We were woken at 7.30 am with our hearts pounding, frightened by the deafening noise. The floor of the cabin was shaking, and some of the crockery fell and broke. This happened every day. The villas are closed because the floors have buckled. It was a family holiday with young children, and we had to give them medication to ease the headaches caused by the constant noise and help them stay calm despite the situation. We couldn’t hold a conversation while sitting at the same table because we couldn’t hear one another. We repeatedly complained to reception at the resort, but they offered us no solution and showed no sense of responsibility. They even claimed that we had come to the resort knowing about the situation. There was no one in charge during our entire stay. A huge disappointment. I should also add that the mattresses in the Mediterranean Suite cabins are completely worn out. They are receiving a growing number of complaints.

They are working next to the campsite and from 7 in the morning with the machines at full speed until 13 hours. I have been several times and I love to go for the silence but this time you do not rest from the noise so annoying from very early.

6.7 José María Travelled with family March 2026 The bungalow (except for one thing that I will put in the negative) is great, the pool is spectacular, although we could not enjoy it because of the temperature.
The mattresses, in our accommodation, were horrible and it's a shame because the bungalow was very good, but the rest has ruined it for us. The animation of children, as in most places, very fair. The works around the campsite made very uncomfortable several times (entrances and exits mainly) and access to the beach of course.

8.7 Cintia Travelled with family March 2026 The campsite is really clean and quiet, at least when we went... That said, as it wasn't a bank holiday or anything, there was very little for children to do during the week.

5.5 estherlibra15@hotmai Travelled with family February 2026 What we liked most was the cabin itself. It was very peaceful because we couldn’t hear any noise from outside.
Given the time of year we went, I understand it wasn’t peak season. But, for example, the buffet was closed, and although the food in the café was good, the prices were outrageous. The entrance is through the car park, as it said, but the reception area is awful and gives a bad impression. On the other hand, the entertainment left a lot to be desired. The entertainers weren’t funny at all. They tried, but without any success.

8.7 Pako Travelled with couple February 2026 The cabins are very lovely and comfortable, and the surrounding area is beautiful. The complex has lots of facilities (an indoor swimming pool, gym, etc.) and, although we didn’t use them, it seems very well-equipped.

9.7 Ana Travelled with family February 2026 Lovely, well-equipped bungalows. Good entertainment for young children.
Bungalows muy chulos y bien equipados. Buena animación para niños pequeños.
We thought the price of the heated pool was a bit steep (€5 per child for one hour), and that check-out could be later, given that the hotel wasn’t full and it was the low season. You have to pay €30 if it’s available and you want to check out by 5 pm.

8.7 Apodo Travelled with family January 2026 All the staff were friendly, including reception, entertainment and maintenance. They treated us well and sorted out the unexpected issues in the cabin, offering a gesture of compensation for the inconvenience.
Some aspects of the cabin need updating. There wasn’t enough information or clarity about the entertainment activities. There were too few group activities for children and adults, despite the professionalism and friendliness of the entertainment staff. I missed having an indoor communal space where you didn’t have to buy something at the bar.

10 Kaoutar Travelled with family January 2026 The location is very good; you can reach the supermarkets in just a few minutes. The cabin is very well insulated from noise, so even if the neighbours are outside, all you have to do is close the door or window to stop hearing them.
