Novales (Cantabria): the village of lemons

Novales is a small rural village in Cantabria, known for its mild climate and the lemon trees you can see all around the town. It is a very peaceful place, with traditional stone mountain houses, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an authentic village, but you are only a few minutes’ drive from the coast.

It is ideal if you are looking for a relaxing holiday, combining nature, easy walks and time at the beach.

What to see in Novales?

  • Town centre and stone houses
The main plan here is to stroll at your own pace: quiet streets, stone façades and lemon trees in the gardens. It is a small village, so it is very easy to walk around without needing a car.

  • Monuments to traditional trades
In the centre you will find small monuments dedicated to the old trades of the village, such as miners or shoemakers. They show that Novales is not only picturesque, but also had an important industrial and craft life.

What to do in Novales?

  • Enjoy the natural surroundings
The area is full of orchards, streams and simple paths for walking. These are not technical routes: they are easy, pleasant walks to disconnect, breathe fresh air and take photos.

Nearby excursions

From Novales, in just a few minutes by car you can reach:

  • Nearby beaches, such as Luaña beach (Cóbreces), so you can combine village life and sea in the same holiday.
  • Very touristic villages such as Santillana del Mar or Comillas, perfect for a half-day or day trip.

3 Potete Travelled with family August 2026 The place is very pretty, set in the heart of nature. The village, Novales, which you can reach on foot in a few minutes, is charming. The Wi‑Fi didn’t work and there’s poor mobile signal at the location, so it’s perfect if what you’re looking for is to unwind from the world.
At least in my case, the room was possibly the worst they had and did not correspond at all with the photos published on Jump2spain.com. The condition of the room was as if an elephant had been through it (see attached photos): 1) The wardrobe was broken; the hinges had come off. I mentioned it to reception as soon as I arrived because I didn’t want them to blame me later. The gentleman at reception didn’t give it much importance, said he’d make a note, and during the seven days I stayed they never fixed the wardrobe. In a previous comment (Daniel, July 2026) the same issue with the furniture was mentioned. The wardrobe was also dirty, very dirty. 2) There were broken and loose tiles on the bedroom floor. If you got up at night to go to the bathroom, it was impossible to avoid the noise of the tiles moving underfoot. 3) There were damp stains on the exterior-facing wall. It also smelled of damp or perhaps, worse, mould. 4) Several light switches next to the bed didn’t work. The room light had to be switched on and off from the switch by the entrance door. 5) Numerous bathroom tiles were cracked. Although this doesn’t affect use of the bathroom, it doesn’t give a good impression to the guest. Under “General room facilities” it lists “Desk” and in “About the accommodation” it states “In addition, they have television, telephone, heating, desk-table and a private bathroom with shower or bath”. THAT WAS NOT TRUE — in our room there was no table or desk. The room was very small; there was barely space for a chair. At breakfast, the bread was already toasted (and cold), which saved you the time of waiting for it to toast, but normally you toast your bread to have it hot. The room looked out onto a green tarpaulin (you can see photos in other comments). Conclusion: terrible value for money, I WILL NOT BOOK AT THIS PLACE AGAIN AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING SO.
Conclusión: relación calidad/precio pésima, NO VOLVERÉ A RESERVAR EN ESTE SITIO Y NO RECOMIENDO HACERLO.

The rooms don’t match the photos — everything inside the rooms is very old. The place itself is paradisiacal, really beautiful, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. They don’t clean the rooms; they just straighten the bed linen, and when you complain they tell you that it’s what you booked through this app, that they’re offers and that’s what there is.

3.7 Sonia Travelled with family August 2026 The surroundings, the tranquillity
El entorno, la tranquilidad
I wouldn't recommend it. Zero attention to details, pillows like those in a hostel, you have to keep asking for a hairdryer and if you arrive in time you'll get one, if not, you won't. There's not even a chair to put your things on. It's unbelievable what they charge and they ration sachets of the world's worst shower gel. The staff are not pleasant. I wouldn't go back — that's what decides whether you like it or not.

4.7 Ariana Travelled with couple August 2026 Regarding the accommodation, the best thing was the breakfast omelette.
The guesthouse could improve... first, make it accessible for people with physical disabilities (carrying luggage up stairs is difficult...). The first night I had to ask for clean sheets — the ones on the bed were dirty and covered in hair... honestly a bit disgusting. They eventually changed our room. Both rooms had a folding bed which, besides taking up space, didn’t serve any other purpose and made moving around very difficult. The bathroom was the same: the distance between the toilet and the bath is ridiculous.

Breakfast was poor — the toast was brought out nearly untoasted and cold, the pastries were okay the first day but hard afterwards, and the fruit was very ripe. 3.9 Marta Travelled with family August 2026 The place was peaceful, beautiful and dreamy.
Review The location is an absolute gem, but unfortunately our experience with the room and the service we received did not match up. They put us in a very small room for three people, with a double bed and a single. The window looked directly onto the kitchen chimney, so the smell in the room depended on what they were cooking. We also had a view of the cemetery and the floor was constantly warm, probably because the kitchen was directly below. The room was extremely hot, to the point of being suffocating, even though it was only about 23 °C outside. With that heat, the fan they offered us — which, frankly, was covered in fluff — was almost essential. The bathroom wasn’t exactly comfortable either. The basin was tiny and getting in and out of the bath was quite difficult and dangerous. For anyone with even a mild mobility issue, getting in or out wouldn’t be easy. At times we genuinely felt we might have a serious accident. When we complained about the room, the man at reception told us that this was what we had booked through Jump2spain.com and that “that was the deal.” The impression he gave us was rather unpleasant, as if getting a deal made us second- or third-class guests. We paid €962 for five nights for three people in a two-star hostelry; personally, I don’t think that’s cheap. Cleaning wasn’t remarkable either: they basically make the bed, but we didn’t feel the room was properly cleaned. Breakfast is fairly mediocre, nothing special. Also, the attitude of the man who’s usually in the lounge — who I suppose is the owner — seemed quite snobbish to me. Of course that’s a personal perception, but it’s the impression I left with. A shame, because the place has a beautiful location and could be wonderful. However, the way we were treated, the condition of the room, the heat and the lack of comfort meant our experience was not good. Maybe if I’d booked through another platform or directly with them — I tried that but they didn’t answer the phone and didn’t manage it via WhatsApp — it would have been different, but this is the reality.
