Why this destination is a must-visit
Benia de Onís
Benia de Onís is a small Asturian village nestled in the heart of nature, in the municipality of Onís and at the gateway to the Picos de Europa. It’s the perfect destination if you’re looking for tranquility, lush green landscapes, and that rural atmosphere so characteristic of eastern Asturias. Plus, its location lets you combine mountain adventures, charming villages, and some of the area’s most famous attractions.
What to See?
In the village itself, it’s worth visiting the Church of Santa Eulalia, which features 15th-century Gothic elements and Baroque altarpieces, and admiring traditional buildings such as the 18th-century Casona de los Valles. Nearby, you’ll also find the Cuevona de Avín, where you can learn more about the glacial fauna of the Picos de Europa, and unique mountain spots like the Belbín sheepfold.
What to do?
Benia de Onís is a great starting point for enjoying the natural surroundings. You can go hiking in the Picos de Europa, explore the region’s pastoral landscapes, or visit small mountain villages. If you’d like to experience one of the area’s most important culinary traditions, you can also learn all about Gamonéu cheese, one of the great symbols of Onís.
What to Eat?
The cuisine here is hearty and distinctly Asturian. Don’t leave without trying a good fabada, a cachopo, or dishes made with locally sourced meats.
Our recommendation
For a traditional option that offers great value for the money, we recommend Casa Morán, located right in Benia de Onís. Founded in 1933, this restaurant specializes in home-style Asturian cuisine and offers a daily lunch special.
If you’d like to round out your holiday with a restaurant featured in a culinary guide, head to El Polesu in Cangas de Onís, which has been awarded a Repsol Guide “Solete” and specializes in Asturian cider house cuisine and ambiance.
Nearby Excursions
One of the must-see destinations is Cangas de Onís, where you can stroll through its lively downtown and visit the famous bridge over the Sella River. From there, you can also continue on to Covadonga, one of Asturias’ most iconic sites and the gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Picos de Europa.
