Six Bridges Cruise: discover Porto from the Douro River

You can’t say you’ve truly experienced Porto until you’ve sailed along the Douro. Enjoy around 50 minutes of panoramic views while cruising beneath the city’s most iconic bridges.

Departure point: Rota do Douro pier (Vila Nova de Gaia).

Timetable: departures every 30 minutes.

  • High season (April to September): from 10:00h to 18:30h.
  • Low season (October to March): from 10:00h to 16:00h.
  • Please note that the activity may not operate on public holidays.

How does it work?
Collect your physical ticket at the hotel reception. Once you have it, simply head to the pier whenever you prefer — no need to reserve a specific time. If one boat is full, you can board the next available departure.

The experience:
Sail beneath Porto’s famous bridges, from the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge to Arrábida, while discovering the history of the city from a completely different perspective.

Why is this plan so special?
Because you decide the pace. Both experiences are flexible and require no prior booking, giving you complete freedom to enjoy Porto exactly how you want.

Visit Quinta da Boeira: wine, history and tradition

Quinta da Boeira is a traditional wine space where you can enjoy artisanal wine tastings while discovering historical replicas of Portuguese ships and boats.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00h to 17:30h.

  • Closed on Sundays and Mondays.
  • Please note that opening times may change on public holidays or special celebrations.

How to access?
No reservation is needed. Simply visit during opening hours and identify your booking using the lead guest’s name.

Travelling with children?
Children under 18 can enter free of charge to visit the boat exhibition, although wine tastings are reserved exclusively for adults.

Why this destination is a must-visit

Curiosities of Vila Nova de Gaia

Discover Vila Nova de Gaia beyond its role as “Porto’s sister” and uncover a city with a strong identity and stories of its own. Separated from Porto by the Douro River, Gaia stands proudly with history, character and unforgettable views.

Here are the curiosities that make it truly unique:

  • The city with the most alcohol per square meter
Although the famous wine carries Porto’s name, the historic cellars are all in Gaia. Thanks to its northern exposure, the warehouses here offer cooler, more humid conditions — perfect for slow, careful ageing. Legend has it that enough wine rests in these tunnels to supply the world for years.

  • The Luís I Bridge: Eiffel or not?
The city’s great icon connects Gaia and Porto in spectacular style. Many believe it was designed by Gustave Eiffel, but the true author was his disciple, Théophile Seyrig. His bold two-level design — metro above, traffic below — won the competition and outshone his own master’s proposal.

  • Serra do Pilar Monastery
This striking circular monastery, listed as a World Heritage Site, offers the most breathtaking sunsets in the area. Its unusual round design was more than aesthetic — it allowed Augustinian monks to watch the entire horizon. Its strategic position later made it a key military stronghold during the 19th-century Siege of Porto.

  • The “Crystal Beach”
Gaia boasts one of Portugal’s longest stretches of Blue Flag beaches along the Atlantic coast. Praia de Lavadores stands out for its dramatic granite formations shaped by erosion, creating natural sculptures that contrast with the region’s typical sandy shores.

  • The “Half Rabbit”
Hidden near the historic riverside, this giant rabbit sculpture made entirely from recycled materials — car bumpers, nets and plastic — is one of Portugal’s most photographed urban artworks. Created by Bordalo II, it delivers a powerful message about consumerism.

  • The Gaia Cable Car
Opened in 2011, this isn’t just a tourist attraction. It connects the upper metro station at Jardim do Morro with the wine cellar district in just five minutes, offering the fastest — and most scenic — way to conquer Gaia’s steep slopes.

Porto is one of Portugal’s most atmospheric cities, known for its historic riverside, colourful architecture and unmistakable character. Set along the banks of the Douro River, it’s a destination that blends culture, gastronomy and scenic views, making it ideal for couples and travellers looking for an authentic city escape with soul.

Make sure you visit:

  • The Ribeira district, Porto’s most iconic area, full of life and river views.
  • Dom Luís I Bridge, offering some of the best panoramic views of the city.
  • São Bento Train Station, famous for its traditional azulejo tiles.
  • Porto Cathedral, one of the city’s oldest and most important monuments.
  • The historic city centre, perfect for wandering through narrow streets.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Walk along the Douro riverfront and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
  • Take a river cruise for a relaxed way to see the city.
  • Explore viewpoints scattered across the hills of Porto.
  • Visit parks and open spaces ideal for a break from sightseeing.
  • Ride the historic tram along the river.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Francesinha, Porto’s most famous and indulgent sandwich.
  • Fresh grilled fish from the Atlantic coast.
  • Bacalhau dishes prepared in traditional ways.
  • Port wine, produced in the Douro Valley nearby.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the famous Port wine cellars.
  • The Douro Valley, known for its vineyards and river landscapes.
  • Matosinhos, ideal for seafood lovers and beach walks.
  • Braga, a historic city full of religious heritage.

9.7 Victor Manuel Travelled with couple August 2026 Everything was fine — attention, cleanliness, staff
Todo estuvo bien atención limpieza personal
The hotel is next to a motorway — if you open the window the traffic noise is unbearable, but if you close it you can't hear anything. That's the only drawback.

8.3 Antonio Travelled with couple July 2026 The hotel is great; the location is a bit far from the centre, but I think it’s better to use Uber if you’re getting around — highly recommended.

9.4 José Antonio Travelled with couple July 2026 The hotel has easy access from the motorway and there is plenty of car park at the front or rear. The reception staff are helpful and give good advice on getting around the area. Breakfast is good and plentiful.
It's a little way from Vila Nova de Gaia, but there is a bus stop nearby that connects you with it, the city centre and São Bento station.

9.1 Roger Travelled with couple July 2026 We loved this holiday to Porto. The hotel is very good, very clean, and everything is quite new. The bathroom isn’t large, but everything is new and more than adequate; it has a hairdryer. The room isn’t very big either but it has everything you need: a table with two people by the window, a socket on the bedside table for charging and two USB ports on the other bedside table, a modest wardrobe with a safe and some extra blankets. Daily housekeeping was very good, although—as we know in Portugal—it tends to be done later in the day; that’s common in all Portuguese hotels. The A1 motorway runs right next to the hotel, which means quite a lot of noise, but the room has two double-glazed windows, so you hear more of the air conditioning than the road. The air conditioning works perfectly and is new. We thought the breakfast was fine; it offered what we usually have. Fresh fruit would have been nicer than pre-cut fruit served in pots, but that’s a minor point. The hotel is about 5 km from the main tourist spot, the Dom Luís I Bridge. It’s not walkable because of the many streets to negotiate, but there’s Uber which will take you for around €4, or buses 901 and 903 whose stops are 200 metres from the hotel and can take you anywhere in Gaia or Porto for €2.50. In the area there’s a Burger King (adjacent to the hotel wall), a McDonald’s opposite the hotel and several restaurants offering better prices than in central Porto. Because the hotel is next to the motorway, it was perfect for quickly setting off to visit nearby cities such as Braga, Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro or Coimbra. The Douro cruise was wonderful and we also enjoyed the visit to the winery.
For example, it could have a minibar in the room.

8.3 Sergio July 2026 The hotel was fine.
Bien el hotel.
The pillows were in poor condition; I mentioned it at reception and they gave me two more. Regarding the package in the offer, the winery visit could not take place as it is closed from Saturday to Monday.

6.9 Juan Travelled with couple July 2026 Friendly staff, clean, comfortable beds and a good breakfast.
Personal amable, limpio, camas cómodas y desayuno bueno.
Watch out!: We were given a room surrounded by schoolchildren who wouldn’t let us sleep, shouting and making noise in the afternoons and especially at night. The teachers in charge were nowhere to be seen, and hotel staff did not move us to another room/floor, saying they had three similar groups staying on other floors. Summary: Be very careful when booking a holiday at this hotel — it’s good value and next to the motorway, which may explain its popularity, but we spent both nights unable to sleep.

9.7 Jose Antonio Travelled with couple March 2026 Overall, everything was fine. The reception was very good, with friendliness and accurate explanations. The hotel has several nearby restaurants and is suitable for travelling with a private vehicle as it has car park. To go to Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia it is convenient to use Uber, a taxi or a bus, as car park is difficult. A good experience.
The rooms are fine, clean, with very good sheets and towels, perhaps a bit small. The breakfast is complete, but a good coffee is missed.

8.3 Carla Travelled with couple March 2026 The staff were very friendly and spoke Spanish. The room for the price is great. A positive point is that there is a Burger King opposite the hotel, which saved us from many dinners, as you arrive tired after a long day…

8.3 Alberto Travelled with couple February 2026 Varied breakfast and the room was fine
Desayuno variado y la habitación estaba bien
There were two activities included in the booking the wine tasting closed Sunday and Monday; the second boat holiday on the 6 bridges we went to the office and they are open from Tuesday to Friday, so we could not enjoy the activities, however we got to the room in the afternoon and without cleaning, we go to make time and when we return they call me from reception to know if we are going to check out at 9 there is a breakdown, that yes they offered me to change to another room.
