Why this destination is a must-visit

Úbeda: Golden Palaces, Renaissance Magic and the Mystery of the Water Synagogue

The capital of the Andalusian Renaissance! Together with neighbouring Baeza, Úbeda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true open-air museum. Its golden-stone palaces, monumental squares and centuries-old pottery tradition will transport you straight to Spain’s Golden Age.

Something you probably didn’t know:

  • This is where the expression “to go off on a tangent” comes from: The famous Spanish saying andar por los cerros de Úbeda dates back to the Reconquista in the 13th century. According to legend, one of King Ferdinand III’s captains, Pero Gil, disappeared just before the city was conquered. He returned after the victory and, when questioned by the king, claimed he had “gotten lost in the hills of Úbeda”. Ever since, the expression has been used to describe someone who loses the thread or strays from the point.

  • The Water Synagogue, a remarkable discovery: In 2007, during demolition work to build a car park and new apartments, a hidden medieval Jewish synagogue was uncovered entirely by chance. Inside is an underground mikveh (ritual bath) fed by a natural spring. During the summer solstice, the sunlight enters in such a way that it illuminates the ritual pool directly.

  • A private chapel fit for an empire: The magnificent Chapel of El Salvador was never intended as a public church, but as the private mausoleum of Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to Emperor Charles V and one of the most powerful men of his time. To bring his vision to life, he commissioned the finest architects of the era, Diego de Siloé and master builder Andrés de Vandelvira.

  • Pottery with a unique emerald-green glaze: Úbeda’s ceramics are famous for their distinctive emerald-green finish, created using a traditional glaze made from copper and lead, a technique inherited from the Hispano-Muslim period. In the old pottery quarter, you can still visit workshops with Arab kilns that have been in continuous use for over a thousand years.

  • The city of Andrés de Vandelvira: The legacy of this Renaissance genius can be admired throughout the city. The Palacio de las Cadenas, now the Town Hall, and the Hospital de Santiago, often called the “Andalusian Escorial”, are masterpieces that showcase his extraordinary sense of symmetry and unrivalled stone craftsmanship.

Our recommendation: For a truly unforgettable view, head to the Redonda de Miradores at sunset. Before you stretches the endless “Sea of Olive Trees” across the Guadalquivir Valley, framed by the peaks of the Sierra Mágina in the distance.

Jaén is one of Andalusia’s best-kept secrets, a destination where history, nature, and gastronomy come together in a truly authentic way. Known as the world capital of olive oil, this charming city offers a slower pace of travel, perfect for couples and families looking to explore inland Spain beyond the usual coastal hotspots.

Make sure you visit:

  • The impressive Jaén Cathedral, a Renaissance masterpiece and one of the most important in Andalusia.
  • Santa Catalina Castle, perched above the city with stunning panoramic views.
  • The old town, full of narrow streets, hidden squares, and historic buildings.
  • Arab Baths of Jaén, among the largest and best-preserved in Spain.
  • The Provincial Museum, ideal for understanding the region’s rich Iberian and Roman heritage.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Enjoy a scenic walk through Parque del Bulevar, perfect for relaxing with children.
  • Visit an olive oil mill and learn how this “liquid gold” is produced, often with tastings included.
  • Take a short drive to Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park for hiking, wildlife spotting, and fresh air.
  • Explore local markets and try traditional sweets and products.
  • Discover interactive exhibits in local museums adapted for younger visitors.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Extra virgin olive oil, the star ingredient in almost every dish.
  • Pipirrana, a refreshing tomato-based salad typical of Jaén.
  • Andrajos, a hearty stew with game meat or fish.
  • Flamenquín, a crispy rolled meat dish popular across the region.
  • Traditional sweets like ochíos, often flavoured with paprika and olive oil.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Úbeda (30 min): a UNESCO World Heritage city filled with Renaissance architecture.
  • Baeza (35 min): equally stunning, with a quieter and more intimate atmosphere.
  • Sierra de Andújar Natural Park (1h): one of the best places in Spain to spot the Iberian lynx.
  • Granada (1h 15 min): home to the iconic Alhambra and a must-see if you’re nearby.

La ubicación
For example, the car park lift broke when we were leaving, so we were unable to get out for a while.

10 Francisco Travelled with couple September 2025 The hotel’s impeccable cleanliness, two huge and very comfortable beds, and the professionalism, friendliness and service of the staff. Thanks to everyone for their attention… we will return.
Well, I suppose the location — we can’t change the village or its spectacular history, so everything is perfect. Lift for small car? Well, depends on the car and the driver.

8 Javier Travelled with family July 2025 Charming place surrounded by monuments, beautiful hotel with perfect cleanliness. Average quality breakfast. Underground car park.
Desayuno calidad media. Parking subterráneo.
Improve two things, one the hotel reception is hidden and upon entering you only locate the bar and improve the entrance with automatic doors since if you are carrying suitcases, it is difficult to enter manually and being made of glass, it is very heavy.

9.1 Rebeca Travelled with couple July 2025 The room was spotless. A 10 for cleanliness. Spacious room and careful decoration. Breakfast unpretentious but good quality.
La habitación estaba impoluta. Un 10 a la limpieza. Habitación amplia y decoración cuidada. Desayuno sin pretensiones pero buena calidad.
We couldn't sleep, there was a constant unbearable noise like from a motor (kitchen fridges, elevator generator??). It is a very negative aspect that overshadows everything else.

9.1 María Elena Travelled with couple February 2025 To begin with the hotel has an excellent location, you can walk to any place in a short time. The staff is charming, we were able to get in a little before check in time. The room was large for the 2 people we traveled with, as were the 2 beds, which were huge. At breakfast there was very little variety of food but I have to highlight the rye bread, it was delicious.
We were unlucky and got a room that was right above the spa and therefore the room always smelled bad, like a locker room. We also missed a minibar in the room. We did not try the parking as it had an elevator and reading reviews it said that some cars could fit very tightly.

8.9 Anónimo February 2025 The accommodation is very good, centrally located, very clean, comfortable beds. The breakfasts and dinners are good, drinks are paid separately at a reasonable price.
The room at night, you could hear a machine, a compressor ... I do not know, to make you wake up was not the noise, but if you wake up it was uncomfortable, we spent two nights and well, I can stand it.

9.1 Vicente February 2025 What I liked most was the location, at least when we went there we had no problem parking. The friendliness of the staff, especially Manuel who was the waiter and treated us very well. Very good value for money hotel.
The only downside is that the mattresses are a little worn. Otherwise everything was perfect.

6.9 Juan Francisco Travelled with family February 2025 The area in which it is located is in the center of the city.
Old rooms, we went with a baby and the photo said it had a bathtub, when we arrived it was a shower tray so we had to buy a bathtub to bathe our baby. There is no parking in the area and they rent you a parking space for 15€ a night in which you have to put the car in an elevator. - Breakfast buffet is a bit sparse, if you arrive later than 8 o'clock you eat the leftovers, they do not replenish the buffet. - Rooms with two beds of 135 together, that if you neglect you sneak between them as they are loose between them.

9.7 Luis January 2025 Very good location within the old town. It is difficult for navigators to get there due to the intricate and narrow old town. Public parking 3 minutes walk away in Santa Clara street (former ruins of the Palace of the Count of Gavia).
Hotel parking lot a little narrow and with vehicle elevator, if you take a big car it will cost you to enter and park, 15€ night.
