Why this destination is a must-visit

Northern Ibiza: where the pose fades and the legend begins

If you’re planning an escape to the northern tip of the island, forget the clichés of neon lights and superclubs. You’re about to discover the real “Deep Ibiza”, the last corner where the island still moves to its original rhythm: wild, mystical and unexpectedly cinematic. This is where the map ends and the stories untold in ordinary guidebooks begin.

Here’s the most intriguing and rebellious side of your next destination:

  • The lighthouse that looks like a candy caneJust a short walk from your hotel stands the Moscarter Lighthouse, the tallest in the Balearic Islands at 52 metres high. Its iconic black-and-white spiral design is unforgettable. But the real magic lies in the coastal walk to reach it: the northernmost point of Ibiza, where on clear days you can even spot Mallorca on the horizon.

  • Portinatx, the Mediterranean’s own HollywoodToday it feels like a peaceful hideaway, but during the 1950s and 60s, Portinatx became an international film set. Its crystal-clear waters and untouched landscapes were used to recreate exotic Pacific shores in the classic film Around the World in 80 Days (1956). Swimming here feels like stepping into a movie scene.

  • The sanctuary of Ibiza’s ancient goddessClose to Portinatx lies the hidden cave temple of Cova des Culleram, dedicated to the goddess Tanit. More than 2,000 years ago, the Carthaginians worshipped this deity of love and fertility here. Even today, flowers and candles are often left behind, as locals believe the island’s unique “energy” is born in this northern corner.

  • The spiritual Sunday ritualIf you happen to be here on a Sunday, head down to the village of Sant Joan. This is one of the last authentic corners of Ibiza. Its market remains delightfully uncommercial, where the artisan selling handmade soap genuinely lives in a remote countryside cottage, not in a staged tourist fantasy.

  • Wine aged beneath the seaIn the coves around Portinatx, some local winemakers experiment by ageing bottles underwater, allowing pressure and Mediterranean salt to shape their flavour. Ask in local restaurants and you may discover one of these rare “shipwreck wines”.

  • The secret of homemade hierbasIn the north, you don’t order the commercial herbal liqueur. Instead, ask for “hierbas de la casa”. Every family in Sant Joan has its own secret recipe, often blending up to 18 local herbs such as thyme, fennel and rosemary. Legend says that one shot after a meal protects your stomach for the rest of the holiday.

  • Expert tip: for a truly unique photo, rent a kayak and search for the famous Cave of Light. At midday, sunlight enters vertically through the rock, turning the water into a glowing natural neon blue.

Experience Ibiza: From Dalt Vila to Dreamy Coves

Ibiza is much more than its legendary nightlife. This Mediterranean gem in the Balearic Islands combines crystal-clear waters, hidden coves, charming whitewashed villages and a surprisingly peaceful countryside. Whether you’re travelling as a family looking for safe beaches and fun activities, or as a couple seeking stylish sunsets and relaxed luxury, Ibiza offers the perfect balance between energy and tranquillity.

Make sure you visit:

  • Dalt Vila (Ibiza Old Town), a UNESCO-listed historic centre with cobbled streets, ancient walls and spectacular views over the harbour.
  • Es Vedrà viewpoint, one of the island’s most iconic and mystical landmarks, especially magical at sunset.
  • Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, a charming inland village with boutique shops and cosy cafés.
  • Las Dalias Hippy Market, perfect for discovering local crafts, fashion and the island’s bohemian spirit.
  • San Antonio’s Sunset Strip, where you can enjoy breathtaking sunsets by the sea.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Cala Comte: famous for its turquoise waters and small rocky islets.
  • Cala Bassa: shallow, calm waters ideal for families with children.
  • Playa d’en Bossa: lively and wide, with plenty of facilities and beach clubs.
  • Cala Llonga: a crescent-shaped bay surrounded by hills, great for a relaxed family day.
  • Cala Saladeta: smaller and more secluded, perfect if you’re looking for postcard views.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Take a boat trip around the island or to nearby Formentera for a full day of exploration.
  • Visit Aguamar Water Park in Playa d’en Bossa for slides and splash zones.
  • Explore Ibiza Horse Valley for a gentle countryside horse-riding experience.
  • Enjoy a coastal walk along the cliffs near Portinatx with panoramic sea views.
  • Discover local markets and open-air events during the summer season.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Bullit de Peix: a traditional fish stew served with rice.
  • Sofrit Pagès: a hearty meat dish typical of Ibiza.
  • Flaó: a sweet cheesecake flavoured with mint and aniseed.
  • Fresh seafood, especially grilled squid and prawns.
  • Hierbas Ibicencas: a local herbal liqueur often enjoyed after dinner.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Formentera (30–45 min by ferry): Caribbean-like beaches and turquoise waters.
  • Santa Eulària des Riu (20 min): a quieter resort town with a lovely promenade.
  • Es Canar (25 min): relaxed coastal atmosphere and access to the Punta Arabí market.
  • Portinatx (35 min): ideal for scenic coves and a more peaceful northern vibe.
