Why this destination is a must-visit
Valencia de Don Juan: the best kept secret of the Kingdom of León
The fairytale castle (Castillo de Coyanza)
- It is one of the most spectacular and photogenic castles in Spain due to its Gothic-Mudejar architecture. Its towers are round and very stylized, which gives it a "movie castle" look.
- Inside it houses the Museum of Valencia de Don Juan. It is not just seeing stones; it is interacting with the history of the Kingdom of León. In addition, at sunset, the lighting makes it the most romantic spot in town. "The World of Water": an oasis in the middle of the plateau.
- Many people travel to Valencia de Don Juan exclusively for its swimming pool complex.
- It is one of the largest and most modern municipal water parks in northern Spain, with a wave pool and state-of-the-art Water Slides. The secret of the "Cave".
- In Valencia de Don Juan, food is taken very seriously, especially anything related to D.O. León.
- In the area there are restaurants located in subway caves dug into the earth, which maintain a constant temperature and a unique atmosphere.
- You can't leave without trying the Prieto Picudo wine (exclusive to this area, a rosé with a lot of needle and flavor) and the Valencia de Don Juan style cod. The "Miracle" of Nuestra Señora del Castillo Vieja Church
- Inside is a 16th century altarpiece with a fascinating story of how it survived wars and fires.
- It is a short visit but full of sacred art that few tourists stop to see, ideal for art lovers seeking tranquility. The greenway: landscapes of clay
- The town is surrounded by red clay gully landscapes that look like something out of a western movie.
- There is a Greenway (the old "Trenillo" train line) that is perfect for walking or cycling. It offers views of the Esla River and the clay cliffs that are the perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of the swimming pools.

León is one of those cities that combine history, gastronomy and atmosphere like few others. Located in the northwest of Spain, in the heart of Castilla y León, it is perfect both for a cultural holiday and to enjoy its lively life in bars and streets. Ideal for couples, heritage lovers and, of course, for those who enjoy eating well.
What to visit?
The great symbol of the city is the Cathedral of León, a Gothic jewel known for its impressive stained glass windows that fill the interior with light and color. Nearby, the Basilica of San Isidoro is another must-see, considered one of the most important Romanesque complexes in Europe. You can not miss a walk through the Barrio Húmedo, the old town full of life, or approach the Casa Botines, one of the few works of Gaudí outside Catalonia that stands out for its unique architecture.
What to do?
The best thing to do in León is to let yourself go. Enjoy a tapas route through the Barrio Húmedo or the Barrio Romántico, where each drink is usually accompanied by something to snack on. Strolling through the streets at sunset is a perfect plan, discovering charming corners at every step. You can also visit museums such as the MUSAC (Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León) or relax in its parks and green areas. If you like the atmosphere, at night the city comes even more alive.
What to eat?
Leon's gastronomy is strong and delicious. The undisputed protagonist is the cocido maragato, which is served "upside down" (meats first). Do not miss the cecina de León, one of the star products, or the botillo, typical of the area. Tapas are almost a religion here, all accompanied by local wines. To finish, try a traditional sweet such as mantecadas or a good puff pastry.
Our recommendation
For a good meal without spending too much, a safe bet is Bar Rebote, very popular for its generous tapas and local ambience. If you are looking for a more special dining experience, we recommend Cocinandos, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Leonese cuisine is reinvented with creativity and lots of flavor.
Nearby excursions
If you feel like exploring further, you can go to Astorga, about 50 km away, where you can discover its impressive Roman legacy and Gaudi's Episcopal Palace.
