Why this destination is a must-visit
Candás, a hidden gem of Asturias full of stories and sea soul
Did you know that Candás is one of those small destinations that hide incredible stories? This charming Asturian fishing village, just 15 minutes from Gijón, captivates with its authenticity, seafaring tradition and fascinating curiosities.
Curiosities that make Candás truly unique
-
A trial… against dolphins!
It may sound unbelievable, but in the 17th century, local fishermen took dolphins to court for damaging their nets. The cetaceans even had a defence lawyer, and legend says they obeyed the ruling and left the area. Today, you can discover this story through a sculpture in Maestro Antuña Park. -
A Christ from the sea
The Cristo de Candás was found floating in the sea in the 16th century, believed to have come from Ireland. Today, it is one of the most revered figures in Asturias and the heart of a deeply rooted local devotion. -
A canning legacy
Beyond its beauty, Candás played a key role in Asturias’ economy, setting fish prices and becoming a reference in the canning industry. Some of the region’s most historic brands have their roots here. -
A lighthouse with breathtaking views
The Candás Lighthouse, perched on the cliffs of Cabo de San Antonio, offers stunning views over the Bay of Biscay. You can still see the old cannons that once defended the coast from pirates. -
Sweets with tradition
The famous marañuelas are more than just a treat, they’re part of the town’s identity. Their unique shape and flavour even spark friendly rivalries with neighbouring villages. -
Festivals by the sea
During the Sardine Festival, Candás comes alive with the scent of grilled fish and festive energy. And the traditional Danza Prima by the sea is one of those magical moments you won’t forget.
Candás doesn’t need grand monuments to win you over. Its harbour, its streets, the rhythm of the sea and its rich history create an authentic destination, perfect to unwind and truly experience Asturias.
