• Dragut’s Pirate Cave, one of a kind in Spain Cullera is home to the only museum in Spain dedicated to piracy inside a natural cave. According to legend, in 1550 the feared Barbary pirate Dragut, successor to Barbarossa, launched a surprise attack on the city. The impact was so devastating that Cullera was abandoned for years. • The origin of the name, not what you think Although “Cullera” sounds like “spoon” in Valencian, its origins are completely different. The name comes from the Arabic “Qulayra”, meaning “summit” or “high place”, a reference to the mountain overlooking the sea.

Unlike the traditional Valencian version, Cullera’s paella is made with fish and seafood, following one golden rule: it must include cuttlefish figatells and fresh produce from the local fish market.
