Why this destination is a must-visit
Cap Salou: on the trail of pirates and bunkers
Think you know Salou? Think again. Discover the hidden side of Cap Salou, where history, bunkers and legends await far from the typical guidebooks.
-
Pirate alert! Forget the sunbeds, these coves were once the favourite hideouts of Barbary pirates. Spots like Cala Morisca were perfect for ambushes before raiding inland villages. A true slice of swashbuckling history.
-
Trenches with a view: At the top of La Talaia, it’s not just pine trees. Venture a little further and you’ll uncover a Civil War bunker, built to protect the coast and monitor the horizon against naval attacks. History meets seaside escape.
-
The lighthouse that leads the way: Standing since 1858, Salou Lighthouse dominates the Costa Dorada. Its beam reaches up to 20 nautical miles, guiding boats while offering one of the most spectacular sunsets in the area.
-
Cala Crancs, the wild gem: This is the last untouched corner. While the centre buzzes with life, here pine trees almost touch the water. A hint of Costa Brava spirit with the essence of Tarragona.
-
Sculpted by the Mestral: The landscape beneath your feet is truly unique. Wind and sea salt have shaped the reddish rocks into striking, almost surreal forms. Raw, natural beauty right by the shore.

Salou: Mediterranean Energy Without Limits
Salou is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Costa Dorada, especially loved by families and couples looking for sun, comfort, and plenty of things to do. With long sandy beaches, a lively promenade, and one of Europe’s best theme parks right on its doorstep, Salou combines relaxation with entertainment in a way that suits all ages.
Make sure you visit:
- The Jaume I Promenade, perfect for an evening stroll among palm trees, fountains, and cafés.
- The Camí de Ronda coastal path, offering beautiful Mediterranean views and quieter coves.
- The Light Fountain, which comes alive at night and is a hit with children.
- Salou’s old town, where you can get a feel for local life away from the beachfront.
- The nearby PortAventura World, a must for thrill-seekers and families alike.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Llevant Beach, Salou’s main beach, wide, lively, and ideal for families.
- Capellans Beach, smaller and more sheltered, great for a relaxed day.
- Llarga Beach, surrounded by pine trees and slightly more peaceful.
- Cala Crancs, a charming cove with clear waters, perfect for snorkelling.
Family-friendly activities:
- Spend a full day enjoying rides and shows at PortAventura World.
- Take the tourist train for a fun and easy way to explore the town.
- Try paddleboarding or kayaking in the calm coastal waters.
- Let the kids enjoy the playgrounds and open spaces along the promenade.
- Enjoy an ice cream stop while watching the sunset by the sea.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Fideuà, a seafood dish made with short noodles instead of rice.
- Fresh grilled fish and seafood from the Costa Dorada.
- Xató, a traditional Catalan salad with cod and romesco sauce.
- Crema catalana, a classic dessert similar to crème brûlée.
Make the most of your visit and go to...
- Tarragona, just 20 minutes away, famous for its Roman ruins and historic centre.
- Cambrils, 10 minutes south, ideal for seafood lovers and a relaxed harbour atmosphere.
- Reus, around 15 minutes inland, known for modernist architecture and local shopping.
