Why this destination is a must-visit

Chiclana de la Frontera Curiosities

Chiclana is far more than just “sun and beach” — although it certainly has plenty of both. This charming corner of the province of Cádiz hides a fascinating history and unique details that even regular summer visitors often overlook.

Discover some of its most surprising curiosities:

The Temple of Hercules and Atlantis

Just off its coast lies the Islet of Sancti Petri. According to legend and ancient chronicles, this was the site of the legendary Temple of Hercules Gaditanus.

Historical fact: It is said that figures such as Julius Caesar and Hannibal once visited it.

The mystical connection: Some theorists and Atlantis seekers believe traces of the lost civilization may lie in this strategic enclave.

Why “de la Frontera”?

Many assume it refers to the border with Portugal — but it doesn’t. Like Jerez, Arcos or Vejer, the name dates back to the Reconquest, when Chiclana marked the frontier between the Christian kingdoms and the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.

The Battle of Chiclana (1811)

A key episode of the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleon’s troops.

It took place in the area of Loma de Sancti Petri.

Although the allied Spanish and British forces technically won, they failed to lift the siege of Cádiz, making it a bittersweet victory.

The Origin of “Chiclana Wine”

Chiclana forms part of the Marco de Jerez wine region — with its own distinct personality. Its wineries produce outstanding fino and muscatel wines.

Fun fact: In the past, almost every house in the town centre had its own small family winery.

The Marín Dolls

If you’re from Spain, you probably remember the iconic flamenco doll that used to sit on top of the TV.

Their birthplace: The Muñecas Marín factory was located in Chiclana. Founded in 1928, its designs won international craft awards before closing in 2014. Today, a museum keeps their legacy alive.

The “Town of Two Centres”

Chiclana has a unique layout:

Chiclana Pueblo: The historic heart, with churches, markets and authentic Andalusian life.

La Barrosa / Novo Sancti Petri: A tourist hub just a few kilometres away, boasting one of Europe’s finest hotel infrastructures and beaches that look straight out of the Caribbean.

A Natural Wonder: La Barrosa Beach

Considered one of Spain’s best beaches, what many don’t know is that it stretches for 8 kilometres. Depending on the tide, you can walk for hours along its fine golden sand, moving from lively areas to untouched cliffs without interruption.

Did you know? “Sancti Petri” means “Saint Peter” in Latin — the patron saint of fishermen — a fitting name given the area’s historic almadraba fishing tradition.

Cádiz: history, sea and Andalusian flavour in every corner

Cádiz is often referred to as the oldest city in Western Europe, and it certainly feels like a living history book by the sea. With its charming old town, golden beaches and relaxed pace, Cádiz is a great choice for both families and couples looking to explore a more authentic side of Andalusia.

Make sure you visit:

  • The Cathedral of Cádiz and climb its tower for amazing panoramic views.
  • The old town, full of narrow cobbled streets, lively plazas, and local shops.
  • La Caleta Beach at sunset, an iconic spot where locals gather.
  • Torre Tavira with its camera obscura experience for unique city views.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Playa de la Victoria: wide, clean and perfect for families.
  • Playa de la Caleta: small, charming and right next to the city centre.
  • Playa de Cortadura: more natural and quiet, ideal for those who enjoy space and peace.
  • Playa Santa María del Mar: a favourite among locals for bodyboarding.

Family-Friendly activities:

  • A boat trip around the Bay of Cádiz.
  • A day at Genovés Park: green, shady, and great for a picnic.
  • Visit the Puppet Museum, fun and unexpected.
  • Explore the Castle of San Sebastián via the scenic coastal walk.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Fried fish platters (“pescaíto frito”), especially in local freidurías.
  • “Tortillitas de camarones” (crispy shrimp fritters).
  • Local cheeses and sherry from nearby Jerez.
  • Artisan ice cream from historic heladerías in the old town.

Make the most of your visit and go to ...

  • El Puerto de Santa María (20 km): great for wine tasting and riverside dining.
  • San Fernando (15 km): a town rich in naval history.
  • Vejer de la Frontera (55 km): a whitewashed hilltop village full of charm.
  • Jerez de la Frontera (35 km): famous for its sherry, horses, and flamenco.

Lugar excepcional en 1ª línea de playa. Aptos muy amplios y cómodos. Zonas comunes muy limpias y bien cuidadas.
I think if there is something negative to point out, it is that the food from the buffet was a bit cold. Very good taste, but temperature could be a bit hotter.
Creo que si hay algo negativo que señalar, es que la comida del buffet estaba un poco fría. Muy buen sabor, perontemperatura mejor un poco más caliente.
