Why this destination is a must-visit
El Puerto de Santa María: stories, legends and charm by the sea
El Puerto de Santa María is not only known as the “City of a Hundred Palaces”, it’s a place with a special spirit where history blends with the scent of wine and the Atlantic breeze.
Here are some fascinating curiosities that make this destination truly unique:
-
The home of “La Niña” Many people associate the discovery of America only with Palos de la Frontera or Seville, but Juan de la Cosa, the cartographer who created the first world map to include America, lived here. It is also believed that the famous caravel “La Niña” was built in the shipyards of El Puerto.
-
A city of palaces
During the 18th century, thanks to flourishing trade with the Americas, countless stately homes were built. The city became known as the City of a Hundred Palaces, as wealthy merchants returning from the Indies displayed their fortune through impressive façades and beautiful Andalusian courtyards, many of which can still be visited today. -
Castillo de San Marcos: a mosque in disguise
The Castillo de San Marcos is a remarkable monument. Step inside and you will clearly see the remains of a 10th-century mosque. After conquering the city, King Alfonso X the Wise decided to build a church within the existing Arab structure, creating a fascinating architectural contrast. -
The legacy of Rafael Alberti
One of the greatest poets of the Generation of ’27, Rafael Alberti, was born here. His love for his hometown was so strong that even during his exile he never stopped writing about “his” sea. Today, his birthplace has become a foundation that you can visit to discover the deep connection between the poet and El Puerto. -
The famous “Vaporcito” of El Puerto
For decades, the Vaporcito de El Puerto (Adriano III) was the iconic boat connecting Cádiz and El Puerto. It became so beloved that it even inspired a famous carnival song. Although the original vessel suffered an accident years ago, the nostalgia for the Vaporcito still lives on in the hearts of the people of Cádiz.
Cádiz: history, sea and Andalusian flavour in every corner
Cádiz is often referred to as the oldest city in Western Europe, and it certainly feels like a living history book by the sea. With its charming old town, golden beaches and relaxed pace, Cádiz is a great choice for both families and couples looking to explore a more authentic side of Andalusia.
