Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Cabanas
Cabanas is one of those places where river, forest and sea meet in an almost magical way. Many travellers simply pass through on the way to Ferrol or visit for its famous beach, but this coastal town hides fascinating stories.
Here are a few curiosities that make Cabanas truly special:
- The naturalist who “chatted” with Darwin
One of the most surprising facts is that Víctor López Seoane lived in the Pazo de Cabanas, also known as Casa Grande de Rioboo. This renowned Galician naturalist exchanged correspondence with Charles Darwin himself. Seoane was a pioneer in the study of Galicia’s fauna and flora, leaving a legacy that still forms part of the region’s scientific history.
- The bridge of 79 arches
The bridge connecting Cabanas with Pontedeume was, in its original 14th-century construction, one of the longest in Europe. It had no fewer than 79 arches and even included two towers, a chapel and a hospital for pilgrims in the middle. Today only 15 arches remain from later reforms, but it still symbolises the historic link between the two towns.
- A forest frozen in time
Cabanas is one of the gateways to the Fragas do Eume Natural Park. What makes this forest extraordinary is that it is considered one of the best preserved examples of thermophilic Atlantic forest in Europe. Its ecosystem has changed so little since the Tertiary period that walking here feels like stepping into a landscape millions of years old.
- Pinar de la Magdalena, a refuge with history
Magdalena Beach is famous for its vast pine forest. What many visitors don’t know is that this area became the favourite summer retreat of the Galician bourgeoisie during the 20th century. Today the pine grove coexists with one of the calmest beaches in the region, often described as a natural saltwater pool.
- The Golden Torque of As Modias
In the 19th century a golden torque, a Celtic neck jewel, was discovered in the Castro de As Modias. It is considered one of the most important examples of ancient castro gold craftsmanship. The piece is now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of the Castle of San Antón in A Coruña, reminding visitors that Cabanas was already a strategic place long before Roman times.
- A tip not to miss
If you enjoy hiking, the Ruta da Auga is highly recommended. This trail passes old watermills and hidden streams that many travellers miss when they only come for the beach.

A Coruña is one of those destinations that quietly surprises you. Perched on Spain’s wild Atlantic coast in Galicia, this elegant seaside city blends dramatic ocean views, rich maritime history and an outstanding food scene. It’s perfect for couples looking for culture and gastronomy, as well as families who enjoy open spaces, beaches and relaxed city breaks with a refreshing coastal breeze.
Make sure you visit:
- The Tower of Hercules, the oldest working Roman lighthouse in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering spectacular views over the Atlantic.
- María Pita Square, the lively heart of the city, surrounded by elegant arcaded buildings and dominated by the impressive City Hall.
- The Old Town (Ciudad Vieja), with its charming cobbled streets, medieval churches and cosy wine bars.
- The seafront promenade, one of the longest in Europe, perfect for scenic walks along the ocean.
- San Carlos Garden, a peaceful viewpoint with panoramic views over the harbour.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Riazor Beach, a wide urban beach right next to the city centre, ideal for sunbathing or long walks.
- Orzán Beach, popular with surfers and great for enjoying powerful Atlantic waves.
- As Lapas Beach, smaller and more sheltered, located near the Tower of Hercules.
- Santa Cristina Beach (just across the bay), perfect for families thanks to its calmer waters.

- Spend time at Monte de San Pedro, where kids can enjoy open green spaces and panoramic viewpoints.
