Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Perillo: Between the Estuary and Modernity
Perillo, in the municipality of Oleiros (A Coruña), is far more than a commuter town. It’s a privileged enclave in the Mariñas region, where quality of life, coastal views and personality come together in style.
Here’s what makes Perillo truly stand out:
-
The “Manhattan” of A Coruña
Perillo — especially Santa Cristina — has earned this nickname thanks to its striking urban silhouette reflected on the water. Set on a peninsula overlooking the estuary, it boasts one of the most recognizable skylines in the area. -
The legendary Santa Cristina Beach
Today it’s a relaxed, family-friendly and sporty spot. But in the 70s and 80s, Santa Cristina was Galicia’s nightlife hotspot. Its discos and pubs drew crowds from across the province. Now, the vibe has evolved into laid-back terraces, surfing and kitesurfing by the sea. -
The Pasaje Bridge: A historic gateway
The bridge connecting Perillo with A Coruña is one of Galicia’s busiest crossings. Centuries ago, it was a toll passage into the city for merchants transporting goods. Nearby also took place the Battle of Elviña during the Napoleonic wars — history runs deep here. -
One of Galicia’s wealthiest municipalities
Perillo belongs to Oleiros, consistently ranked among the municipalities with the highest per capita income in Galicia. This is reflected in its green-focused urban planning, parks like the Thirteen Roses, and bike lanes that prioritize quality of life. -
A biodiversity haven in the estuary
Despite urban development, the estuary remains a key migration point for bird species. In winter, it’s common to spot ornithologists along the promenade observing birds arriving from northern Europe.
Did you know?
Many of Perillo’s streets and parks are named after revolutionary figures and thinkers — such as Parque de la Libertad or Plaza de la Independencia — a distinctive hallmark of Oleiros’ cultural and political identity.
A Coruña is one of those destinations that quietly surprises you. Perched on Spain’s wild Atlantic coast in Galicia, this elegant seaside city blends dramatic ocean views, rich maritime history and an outstanding food scene. It’s perfect for couples looking for culture and gastronomy, as well as families who enjoy open spaces, beaches and relaxed city breaks with a refreshing coastal breeze.
Make sure you visit:
- The Tower of Hercules, the oldest working Roman lighthouse in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering spectacular views over the Atlantic.
- María Pita Square, the lively heart of the city, surrounded by elegant arcaded buildings and dominated by the impressive City Hall.
- The Old Town (Ciudad Vieja), with its charming cobbled streets, medieval churches and cosy wine bars.
- The seafront promenade, one of the longest in Europe, perfect for scenic walks along the ocean.
- San Carlos Garden, a peaceful viewpoint with panoramic views over the harbour.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Riazor Beach, a wide urban beach right next to the city centre, ideal for sunbathing or long walks.
- Orzán Beach, popular with surfers and great for enjoying powerful Atlantic waves.
- As Lapas Beach, smaller and more sheltered, located near the Tower of Hercules.
- Santa Cristina Beach (just across the bay), perfect for families thanks to its calmer waters.
Family-friendly activities:
- Visit the Domus, an interactive museum dedicated to the human body, with hands-on exhibits for children.
- Explore the Aquarium Finisterrae to discover marine life from the Galician coast and beyond.
- Spend time at Monte de San Pedro, where kids can enjoy open green spaces and panoramic viewpoints.
- Take a boat trip around the bay to see the city from a different perspective.
- Enjoy cycling or skating along the safe and scenic seafront promenade.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus), served with olive oil, paprika and sea salt.
- Empanada gallega, a savoury pie filled with tuna, meat or seafood.
- Fresh Atlantic seafood, from barnacles to razor clams.
- Tarta de Santiago, a traditional almond cake dusted with icing sugar.
- Albariño wine, crisp and aromatic, perfect with seafood dishes.
Make the most of your visit and go to...
- Santiago de Compostela (about 1 hour): the iconic pilgrimage city with its magnificent cathedral and UNESCO-listed old town.
- Betanzos (30 minutes): a charming medieval town famous for its Spanish omelette and historic centre.
- Costa da Morte (around 1–1.5 hours): dramatic cliffs, wild beaches and authentic fishing villages.
- Fragas do Eume Natural Park (1 hour): one of Europe’s best-preserved Atlantic forests, ideal for nature lovers.

La cercanía a A Coruña y a pie de la playa
El olor de los desagües, los grifos de los lavabos y ducha estaban flojos parecía que se iban a romper.

Ubicacion
Breakfast very poor. Not good machine coffee and little variety of pastries. Well no variety. All industrial. There was also no toast bread. Just bimbo. Fruit variety only oranges. It is true that we went in December but it was very cold in the hotel. The rooms took a long time to heat up with the air conditioner. Maybe it's better to enjoy it in summer. Somewhat old facilities.
El Desayuno muy deficiente. No buen café de maquina y poca variedad de bollería . Bueno nada de variedad . Todo industrial. Tampoco había pan de tostadas . Solo bimbo. Variedad fruta solo naranjas.
