Why this destination is a must-visit
Óbidos is, without a doubt, one of those places that seem to have been frozen in time, yet infused with a vibrant energy that goes far beyond being just a “pretty village”. It is a town full of curious stories and traditions that make it unique in Portugal.
Here are some of the most fascinating curiosities of the “Vila das Rainhas”:
The Royal Wedding Gift
For centuries, Óbidos was known as the “Vila das Rainhas”. This tradition began in 1282, when King D. Dinis gifted the village to his wife, Queen Santa Isabel, as a wedding present. From then until the 19th century, the village formed part of the dowry of almost all the queens of Portugal.
The Literary Capital
Óbidos is a UNESCO Literary Village. The most curious thing is how books have been integrated into unexpected spaces:
- Livraria de Santiago: A bookstore located inside a 12th-century church.
- Mercado Biológico: You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables while browsing old books displayed along the walls.
- The Literary Man: A hotel that houses more than 50,000 books.
The Cup of Ginjinha
Although it is enjoyed throughout the country, Óbidos’ Ginjinha has a special reputation. The most curious part is the experience of drinking this cherry liqueur in an edible chocolate cup. It is said that the chocolate tradition began here to enhance the flavour of the liqueur and avoid wasting glasses at fairs.
A Castle with a “Second Life”
The Castle of Óbidos, of Roman origin and later fortified by the Arabs, is now one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Interestingly, it was the first state building to be converted into a Pousada (a historic luxury hotel), allowing anyone to sleep like royalty… if the budget allows.
Its Walkable Walls
Unlike other castles where you can only look at the walls, in Óbidos you can walk the 1.5 km of wall that surrounds the entire historic centre. Of course, most sections have no railings, so curiosity comes with a touch of adrenaline.
Josefa de Óbidos: The Exception
At a time when women barely had a voice in art, Josefa de Óbidos became one of the most famous painters of the 17th century in Portugal. She is one of the few female artists of the Baroque era with an extensive, recognised body of work, and her paintings still adorn the Church of Santa Maria.

We went during Holy Week and were told it was low season, so there were no activities or entertainment, and the pizzeria and other services were closed. Upon arrival, we were not informed that we could order bread or breakfast right there at the campsite; we found out on the day of check out. Such a shame.

Very good
Bathrooms and dishwashing area away from the store.
Starting from September 1st, the bar is closed during the week.

The only thing we didn't like much was that at the campsite the only place to have dinner was a very expensive food truck (I went with my boyfriend and only two pizzas were almost 30 euros and we were still a little hungry, although they were delicious). Also, it is an area with a lot of humidity and with some slightly difficult roads at first.
