Why this destination is a must-visit
Calafell: Where History and the Mediterranean Meet
Calafell is not just an endless beach on the Costa Dorada. It’s a destination layered with fascinating stories that set it apart from any other seaside escape.
- The “Baby Bottle” Beach of the Costa Dorada
For decades, Calafell has been affectionately known as “la playa del biberón.”
Why? Its waters are incredibly shallow. You can walk for meters and meters before the sea reaches above your waist — making it Spain’s pioneering family tourism hotspot. The safest place for children to learn to swim and for parents to truly relax.
- An Iberian Citadel… Rebuilt to Be Lived
Unlike most archaeological sites where you only see stones on the ground, the Iberian Citadel of Calafell is unique in Europe.
Here, experimental archaeology was used to reconstruct houses, walls and towers on top of the original remains. Step inside a 2,500-year-old home, touch the structures and experience history as if you were truly there. This is as close as it gets to time travel.
- The Cradle of Literary Greatness
Few people know that Calafell became a refuge for literary giants. Editor Carlos Barral lived here in his iconic Casa Barral — now a seaside museum — and attracted figures such as Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and Jorge Edwards.
It is said that among Calafell’s streets, ideas were born that would transform 20th-century Spanish-language literature forever.
- The Watchful Castle
The Castle of Santa Creu stands not by the sea, but in the old town.
From its summit, enjoy a 360° panoramic view once used to spot attacks from Barbary pirates. It also preserves a striking medieval cemetery with tombs carved directly into the rock — an unforgettable sight.
- Waters Once Believed to Be “Miraculous”
At the beginning of the 20th century, visitors came to Calafell not for leisure, but for health. Its waters were believed to contain a higher concentration of iodine than elsewhere in the Mediterranean, ideal for treating bone and skin conditions.
The famous Sanatorio de San Juan de Dios was built here for that very reason. Today, it has been transformed into the luxury hotel Le Méridien Ra — still overlooking the same pure sea and air.
- Arrossejat: A Taste of Its Seafaring Soul
Though now a vibrant tourist destination, Calafell proudly preserves its fishing heritage.
Don’t leave without trying the traditional “Arrossejat.” In this humble yet flavorful dish, noodles or rice are first toasted in the pan before being cooked — a technique perfected by local fishermen over generations.
Calafell is not just a place you visit. It’s a place you discover, layer by layer.
