Why this destination is a must-visit

Curiosities of Haro: Wine, Lights and Legendary Battles

Haro is not just the “Capital of Rioja”; it’s a city that breathes history, Belle Époque wealth and traditions you won’t find anywhere else in the world. If Logroño is the heart of the region, Haro is undoubtedly its elegance.

The world’s highest concentration of century-old wineries
In the iconic Barrio de la Estación, you’ll find the greatest density of historic wineries anywhere on the planet. In the mid-19th century, they strategically settled beside the railway tracks — the “internet of the era” — to export wine to Bordeaux when phylloxera devastated the French vineyards.

“Haro, Paris and London”
Haro proudly became one of the first cities in Spain to install public electric lighting in 1890. The popular saying “Ya estamos en Haro, que se ven las luces” (“Now we’re in Haro — you can see the lights”) was born from this milestone. At the time, only cities like Paris or London rivaled its technological modernity.

The Wine Battle (One of a Kind)
Every June 29th, the cliffs of Bilibio turn purple. Thousands gather to drench each other in wine using water guns, buckets and sprayers in a celebration recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. What began decades ago as a simple picnic after a pilgrimage evolved into one of Spain’s most unique festivities.

The “Horseshoe Quarter”
Looking for tapas? Don’t ask for a street — ask for La Herradura. Named for the horseshoe shape formed by its main streets (Santo Tomás, Plaza de la Iglesia and San Martín), this area is the social heartbeat of Haro, where hopping from bar to bar is almost a sacred ritual.

The Jarros of Haro
Locals are known as “jarreros.” Legend says that residents once placed jugs of wine at their doorsteps to welcome travelers. Today, the jarro is the city’s symbol, featured in fountains, monuments and the most iconic souvenirs.

Did you know?
The Teatro Bretón de los Herreros, inaugurated in 1840 on the site of a former church, is considered one of the most beautiful theatres in northern Spain, renowned for its exceptional acoustics — a lasting testament to the prosperity the wine trade brought to Haro in the 19th century.
