Curiosities of the destination: Salou and La Pineda

• The “Port of the Kings”
  The natural port of Salou played a key role in the Middle Ages. In 1229, King Jaume I set sail from here with more than 150 ships to conquer Majorca. Today, the seafront promenade proudly bears his name in tribute to this historic voyage.

• Pirate’s refuge
  During the 16th and 17th centuries, the coves of Cap Salou served as ideal hideouts for Barbary pirates. To defend the coast, the Torre Vella was built and used as a lookout to spot enemy ships — a landmark you can still visit today.

• Millenary olive trees
  Along the 30 de Octubre promenade, admire 16 monumental olive trees that are over a thousand years old. Originally from the Maestrazgo region, they were brought here to embellish the city with living history.

• Gaudí’s footprint
  Just 15 minutes away in Reus, Antoni Gaudí was born. This strong modernist influence is visible in Salou itself, especially at the Xalet Bonet, designed by a disciple of Gaudí and reminiscent of Park Güell.
