Why this destination is a must-visit
Peñíscola, located in the province of Castellón, in the heart of the Costa del Azahar, is one of those destinations that combine sea, history and Mediterranean atmosphere in the same place. Its silhouette, dominated by a Templar castle facing the sea, makes it a living postcard, ideal for families looking for a comfortable beach or for couples looking for a charming holiday.
What to visit?
The main protagonist is the Castillo del Papa Luna, a medieval fortress built by the Templars that stands on a rock surrounded by the Mediterranean and offers spectacular views. At its feet stretches the old town of Peñíscola, with cobbled streets, white houses and flower-filled corners that invite you to get lost without haste. It is also worth touring the Natural Park of the Sierra de Irta, a protected area with pristine coves and trails by the sea, and stroll along the lively promenade, perfect for enjoying the coastal atmosphere at sunset.
What to do?
In Peñíscola you can enjoy long days on the beach at the large, family-friendly North Beach, with the castle as a backdrop. Another good option is hiking or cycling routes through the Sierra de Irta, combining nature and sea views. If you are travelling with your family, an ideal plan is to stroll through the old town at sunset and have a drink on its terraces, or sign up for water activities such as kayaking or paddle surfing in its calm waters.
What to eat?
The local gastronomy has a strong seafood flavor. You can not leave without trying the suquet de peix, a traditional fish stew full of flavor, or a good arroz a banda made with fresh produce of the day. Also of note are the prawns and fish from the fish market, as well as the typical sweets of the area to accompany a coffee in front of the sea.
If you are a sweet addict, you can't miss the popular rollets d'anís, crunchy aniseed-flavored doughnuts, perfect to accompany coffee after a meal by the sea.
Our recommendation
To enjoy local cuisine in a special setting, we recommend Restaurante Tío Pepe, a classic Peñíscola restaurant where fresh produce and traditional recipes are the main protagonists.
Nearby excursions
If you feel like exploring the surroundings, you can visit Morella, an impressive inland walled city that looks like something out of a medieval fairy tale. Another interesting option is to visit Benicarló, known for its seafaring tradition and its excellent seafood-based cuisine.
