Destination

Puerto de la Cruz is a historic coastal town on the north coast of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and lush volcanic mountains, it's renowned for its natural beauty, Canarian culture and a more traditional feel than the island's southern resorts. A favourite with European travellers, Puerto de la Cruz is ideal for relaxation, family fun and exploring the island's unique landscapes.

Top attractions

  • Loro Parque: One of the best zoos in Europe, with dolphins, penguins, orcas and exotic birds - a must for families.
  • Jardín Botánico (Botanical Garden): A tranquil garden with tropical and subtropical plants from all over the world.
  • Castillo San Felipe: A 17th century fort by the sea, now used as a cultural centre and exhibition space.
  • Plaza del Charco: The beating heart of the city, full of cafes, shops and local life, perfect for people watching.
  • Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia: A charming 17th century church in the old town.

Best beaches

  • Playa Jardín: Designed by local artist César Manrique, this is the city's most famous beach, with black volcanic sand, gardens and all services.
  • Playa Martiánez: Close to the city centre and ideal for surfers and bodyboarders.
  • Lago Martiánez: Not a beach, but a large saltwater pool complex right on the seafront - great for swimming and relaxing in the sun.
  • Playa de San Telmo: A small, sheltered beach near the old town with natural pools and a traditional atmosphere.
  • Nearby beaches such as El Bollullo: More wild and natural, ideal for a quieter day out and for nature lovers.

Family Friendly Activities

  • Loro Parque: Offers all-day fun for all ages, with animal shows, aquariums and lush parkland.
  • Lago Martiánez: Safe saltwater pools with shallow areas for children, loungers for adults and on-site restaurants.
  • Mini train to Loro Parque: Kids will love this fun and easy way to get from the city to the park.
  • Plaza del Charco playground: Central and shaded, ideal for a break from sightseeing.
  • Whale and dolphin watching (from nearby harbours): Easy to arrange and a great experience for families.

Local gastronomy

  • Papas arrugadas with mojo: Local potatoes served with spicy green or red sauces, a Canarian classic.
  • Ropa vieja: A hearty dish of chickpeas, minced meat and vegetables, typical of the islands.
  • Fresh fish with Canarian mojo or garlic sauces: Often served grilled with local side dishes.
  • Bienmesabe: A traditional dessert made with almonds, honey and egg yolk, often served with ice cream.
  • Gofio: A unique toasted flour used in many local dishes - sometimes mixed with honey or milk as a snack.

  • Icod de los Vinos: Home to the famous Drago Milenario tree, a symbol of Tenerife.
  • Garachico: A charming town with natural lava pools and cobbled streets, perfect for a quiet afternoon.

6.4 Leticia Travelled with couple May 2025

2.9 Fabiola Travelled with couple May 2025 The weather and good scenery of the island
I would mention all aspects, more than a 3 star hotel seems a pension, had paid breakfast and dinner in the offer and being celiac m said I could not dine, very little light for access to the rooms, the carpet in the hallway indecent. It has nothing to do with what you see.

7.7 Antonio Travelled with couple May 2025 There is no complaint about the accommodation, but the flight was untimely and delayed, we lost the car rental 60€ nobody is responsible and the worst thing is that we stayed a whole night at the airport Tenerife South and we also lost a night in a hotel.
