Destination

Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia in northwestern Spain, is one of the world's most important pilgrimage destinations. Renowned for its historic old town and as the final stop on the Camino de Santiago, the city offers a rich blend of culture, spirituality and Galician charm.

Top attractions:

  • Santiago Cathedral: The final destination of the Camino, this cathedral is a masterpiece of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. Make sure you don't miss the Botafumeiro ritual and the tomb of Saint James.
  • Praza do Obradoiro: the city’s central square, surrounded by impressive buildings such as the Hostal dos Reis Católicos and the Pazo de Raxoi, home to the University of Santiago de Compostela.
  • The Museo do Pobo Galego is housed in the former Convent of San Domingos and explores Galician culture, traditions and architecture.
  • The Monastery of San Martín Pinario: One of Spain’s largest and most impressive monasteries, it is located near the cathedral.
  • Parque da Alameda: A peaceful park offering panoramic views of the old town and cathedral towers.

Family-friendly activities:

  • City Train Tour: A fun and relaxed way for families to explore Santiago’s old town and key landmarks.
  • Parque da Alameda playground: Spacious park areas with children’s zones and plenty of room to run around.
  • Galician Centre of Contemporary Art (CGAC): Features modern exhibits and sometimes hosts family workshops.
  • Guided Tours with Legends: Many walking tours include entertaining stories and legends, which are ideal for children.
  • The nearby Aquarium Finisterrae in A Coruña: Located about an hour’s drive away, it offers interactive marine exhibits and panoramic ocean views.

Local gastronomy:

  • Pulpo a la Gallega: Octopus cooked with paprika, olive oil and sea salt, and typically presented on a wooden platter.
  • Empanada Gallega: A savoury pie filled with tuna, meat or vegetables, ideal for picnics or quick lunches.
  • Tarta de Santiago: An almond cake dusted with icing sugar and bearing the cross of Saint James, it is simple yet iconic.
  • Zamburiñas and navajas: Delicious small scallops and razor clams, best enjoyed grilled.
  • Albariño wine: The perfect white wine from Galicia to pair with seafood.

Nearby attractions:

  • A Coruña: This coastal city has a Roman heritage, beautiful beaches and the famous Tower of Hercules lighthouse.
  • Rías Baixas: Explore the coastal inlets, which are renowned for their wine and seafood, and the charming seaside villages of Combarro and Sanxenxo.
  • Finisterre (Fisterra): Once considered the 'end of the world', this dramatic coastal location is a symbolic extension of the Camino de Santiago.
  • Padrón is just 25 km away and is closely linked to Saint James, being famous for its spicy green peppers.
  • Noia: This medieval town boasts gothic churches and a picturesque riverside promenade.

The breakfast is terrible! The fridge doesn't work, the hairdryer doesn't work, there's no place to put a suitcase, there's no place for a toiletry bag in the bathroom, the bathtub is slippery.
El desayuno terrible! El frigorífico no funciona, el secador, no funciona, no hay sitio para poner maleta, no hay sitio para neceser en el baño, la bañera resbala.

Es muy económico El desayuno estaba rico Los chicos de recepción eran agradables
I would not rate it as 4 stars. It looks more like a hostel. We left one night early because we were not very comfortable.
No lo valoraría como 4 estrellas. Más bien parece un hostal. Nos fuimos una noche antes porque no estábamos muy cómodos

1.5 Vanesa Travelled with couple November 2019 We had no heating in the room because we were the only ones on the floor. The room was taken out of the 70's but without any kind of arrangement, I think the four stars should be reviewed. One of the days at breakfast the coffee machine started leaking chocolate and I immediately alerted the hotel staff and to my surprise they did not pick it up at all, any other guest could have fallen with the liquid on the floor. The breakfast was very meager.
