Why this destination is a must-visit
Mutxamel offers a quieter way to discover the Alicante area, with the Mediterranean close by but the town’s character rooted in its own history and fertile countryside. Here, narrow streets and an old defensive tower tell stories of the past, while the celebrated local tomato brings the flavours of the huerta straight to the table.
It suits travellers who like to look beyond the best-known coastal resorts: couples can enjoy a gentle wander and a leisurely meal, while families can mix a little history with time outdoors. Set aside a half-day to explore at an unhurried pace, or use Mutxamel as a peaceful base for nearby Alicante and the coast.
Make sure you visit:
Begin in el Ravalet, the old neighbourhood of Muslim origins, where narrow streets and colourful façades invite you to slow down and look around. It is a lovely place for a relaxed morning stroll, especially if you enjoy discovering the details of a town on foot rather than rushing between sights.
A short walk away, the tower of Iglesia del Salvador recalls a more turbulent chapter in local history. Built in the 16th century as a defensive tower against attacks by Barbary pirates, it gives the town centre a distinctive landmark and a story worth pausing for. Afterwards, head to Jardines de Peñacerrada, a botanical oasis where French, English and Italian garden styles share the same setting, offering a calm change of pace for couples and families alike.
Family-friendly activities:
A good family visit can begin with a wander through el Ravalet, turning the old streets into an easygoing history trail. The tower at Iglesia del Salvador makes a memorable stop, particularly for children who enjoy tales of pirates and the people who once needed to protect their homes.
Then take a quieter break in Jardines de Peñacerrada. Its varied garden styles give everyone something different to notice, and it is a pleasant place to pause together before continuing your day. Mutxamel’s scale makes it easy to keep the outing flexible, with time for a relaxed meal or a holiday towards the coast if the family is ready for a change of scenery.
Local delicacies you have to try:
The flavour most closely associated with Mutxamel is its Tomate de Mutxamel, prized for its generous size, fine skin and sweet, intense taste. Look for it when it is in season at local shops or on restaurant menus, and try it simply, with good bread and olive oil, so its character can take centre stage.
The town’s fertile huerta is sustained by an ingenious irrigation system of Islamic origin, making food part of the landscape as well as the local identity. Ask what produce is freshest when you sit down for lunch, and build your meal around the season’s vegetables. It is a delicious way to understand why Mutxamel’s agricultural heritage still matters.
Make the most of your visit:
Mutxamel is well placed for pairing a restful town stay with a taste of the wider Alicante area. These nearby outings make easy additions to your plans:
- Alicante (about 15 minutes by car): explore the provincial capital for a livelier contrast to Mutxamel’s quiet streets.
- El Campello (about 15 minutes by car): head towards the Mediterranean for a change of scenery by the coast.
- Sant Joan d’Alacant (about 10 minutes by car): visit a neighbouring town close to Mutxamel.
- Alicante’s coastline (about 20 minutes by car): make a coastal outing part of your stay, especially on a warm afternoon.

Alicante is the kind of city that makes a short break feel effortless. Set on the Costa Blanca, it combines city beaches, a lively old town and mild weather almost all year round, with a relaxed Mediterranean rhythm that's easy to fall into.
It works brilliantly for couples who want sun, good food and evening strolls by the sea, and just as well for families looking for easy beach days with plenty to do in between. Spring and autumn are especially lovely: warm enough for the beach, but without the summer crowds.
Make sure you visit:
Begin high up at Santa Bárbara Castle, perched on Mount Benacantil, with sweeping views over the bay and the city rooftops. Ride up in the lift that starts by Postiguet beach, then stroll back down through the Barrio de Santa Cruz, a maze of whitewashed houses, steep steps and flowerpots clinging to the castle slope.
Down at sea level, join the locals on the Explanada de España, the palm-lined promenade famous for its wavy mosaic pavement, and follow it to the marina for a drink at sunset. Nearby, the Basilica of Santa María and the Modernist Mercado Central are well worth a look, the market especially in the morning, when the stalls are at their best.
Beaches we think you'll like:
Postiguet is right in the city centre, perfect for a quick swim between sightseeing, with the castle rising just behind. For more space, take the tram to San Juan Beach, a long stretch of fine golden sand with shallow water that families love.
Albufereta is a smaller, calmer bay between the two, while the coves of Cabo de las Huertas offer rocky corners and clear water for snorkelling, a more natural setting just a few minutes from town.
Family-friendly activities:
Children love the lift up to the castle, which runs through a tunnel carved into the mountain, and the fortress itself has plenty of walls and lookouts to explore. Afterwards, the MARQ Archaeological Museum brings history to life with interactive displays, a great option for a hot afternoon.
For a full day out, catch a boat from the port to Tabarca Island (about an hour), a protected marine reserve with crystal-clear water, a tiny walled village and quiet spots to swim. If you visit in June, the Hogueras de San Juan festival fills the streets with giant sculptures, music and fireworks.
Local delicacies you have to try:
Rice is king in Alicante. Book a table for lunch and order arroz a banda, cooked in rich fish stock, or arroz del senyoret, made with peeled seafood so you don't have to get your hands dirty; arroz negro, coloured with squid ink, is another local favourite.
At the Mercado Central or in a traditional tapas bar, try the salazones, cured fish such as mojama (salted tuna) and roe, which go perfectly with a cold drink. For something sweet, look out for turrón from Jijona, the almond nougat made just up the road.
Make the most of your visit:
Alicante is an easy base for exploring the Costa Blanca. These are our favourite trips nearby:
- Elche (25 minutes): a vast palm grove listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Villajoyosa (30 minutes): brightly painted houses by the sea and a long chocolate-making tradition.
- Altea (45 minutes): a whitewashed old town crowned by a blue-domed church.
- Guadalest (1 hour): a mountain village perched on a rock above a turquoise reservoir.
