Why this destination is a must-visit

Puerto del Carmen: From a Secluded Fishing Village to Lanzarote’s Tourist Hotspot

Before becoming Lanzarote’s main tourism hub, Puerto del Carmen was a modest fishing settlement. Its history is full of fascinating surprises:

  • From “La Tiñosa” to Puerto del Carmen: For centuries, it was known as La Tiñosa, a place name probably of indigenous Guanche origin. It officially changed its name in 1957 in honour of the patron saint of fishermen, just before tourism began to take off.

  • The island’s first hotel: Hotel Fariones opened here in 1967, becoming the first hotel on Lanzarote and marking the start of the island’s economic growth.

  • The “barrilla” trade: In the 18th century, before tourism and large-scale fishing, the port traded in barrilla, a native plant used to produce caustic soft-drink for making glass and soap in Enlightenment-era Europe.

  • A port of national importance, and its loss: In 1900, the port was declared the island’s main port thanks to its exports of wine, onions and barrilla. It lost this distinction in 1928 to Arrecife.

  • An island refuge for a Nobel Prize winner: Just a few minutes from the port, in the municipality of Tías, you’ll find the house museum where Portuguese writer José Saramago lived for the last 18 years of his life.

  • Europe’s IRONMAN mecca: The legendary IRONMAN Lanzarote, one of the toughest events on the world circuit due to the volcanic winds, starts and finishes at the iconic Playa Grande.

  • Manrique before Manrique: The first developments preserved the traditional style, with buildings no higher than two storeys and white façades with green or blue woodwork, helping define the island’s visual identity.

Our recommendation: You don’t need to book a complicated excursion to see marine life. Head to Playa Chica for a snorkelling session. This small, sheltered cove is close to the town centre, and its volcanic seabed is a natural aquarium just a few metres from the shore.

Lanzarote, the paradise shaped by fire

Lanzarote is one of the most unique islands in the Canary archipelago, where dramatic volcanic landscapes meet whitewashed villages and crystal-clear Atlantic waters. Declared a Biosphere Reserve, this island offers a striking mix of nature, art and tradition, largely shaped by the visionary local artist César Manrique.

With year-round sunshine, family-friendly beaches and otherworldly scenery, Lanzarote is ideal for couples seeking relaxation as well as families looking for adventure in a safe and welcoming environment.

Make sure you visit:

  • Timanfaya National Park, where you can witness geothermal demonstrations and explore surreal volcanic landscapes.
  • Jameos del Agua, a spectacular volcanic cave transformed into an architectural masterpiece by César Manrique.
  • Cueva de los Verdes, an impressive lava tunnel formed by ancient eruptions.
  • Mirador del Río, offering breathtaking panoramic views over La Graciosa.
  • Teguise, the island’s former capital, known for its charming streets and traditional Sunday market.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Playa Blanca, perfect for families thanks to its calm waters and golden sand.
  • Papagayo Beaches, a collection of unspoilt coves with turquoise waters.
  • Playa de Famara, ideal for surfers and those who love wild, open landscapes.
  • Playa del Reducto in Arrecife, a central and sheltered beach great for a relaxed swim.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Ride camels across the volcanic slopes in Timanfaya National Park.
  • Spend the day at Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park with animal shows and water attractions.
  • Take a boat trip to La Graciosa for a peaceful island escape.
  • Explore the island’s many natural pools during low tide.
  • Visit the César Manrique Foundation to learn about the artist who shaped Lanzarote’s identity.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Papas arrugadas served with mojo rojo and mojo verde sauces.
  • Fresh grilled fish such as vieja or sea bream.
  • Goat’s cheese produced locally on the island.
  • Gofio, a traditional Canarian toasted grain flour used in both sweet and savoury dishes.
  • Malvasía wine from the volcanic vineyards of La Geria.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • La Graciosa (30 minutes by ferry from Órzola), a peaceful island with sandy tracks and untouched beaches.
  • Fuerteventura (around 30 minutes by ferry from Playa Blanca), perfect for a day of exploring more Canary Island beaches.
  • Los Hervideros, dramatic cliffs where waves crash into volcanic formations.
  • El Golfo, home to the striking green lagoon of Charco de los Clicos.

7.7 Hermi56 Travelled with family September 2026 The staff were friendly, and the hotel had a variety of facilities. Car Park was easy.
El trato del personal y variedad de instalaciones del hotel. Facilidad de aparcamiento.
Cleaning of the communal areas. The entrance to our room constantly had “bits and pieces” lying around. At breakfast, there needs to be another toaster; the one there is slow and seems underpowered, so we had to put the bread through more than three times. Small things that could be sorted out and would improve the guest experience.
Limpieza zonas comunes.
