Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Aguadulce
Aguadulce has its name for a reason, and it’s not just a marketing idea from the 1960s. Discover some of the most fascinating facts that make this beautiful corner of Almería so special:
-
The mystery behind the name (water that isn’t salty)
It’s called Aguadulce because fresh water springs emerge right by the seashore. In the past, sailors took advantage of these natural filtrations from the Sierra de Gádor to refill their drinking water supplies without having to sail far from the coast. -
The “Kilometre Zero” of Spanish tourism
Aguadulce is part of tourism history. In 1964 it was declared the first Centre of National Tourist Interest in Spain. In many ways, the modern sun-and-beach holiday model that we know today began right here. -
A Hollywood base by the sea
Thanks to its proximity to Tabernas, Aguadulce, in Almería, became the perfect coastal base for Western film crews. Stars such as Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg stayed here while filming in the desert, seeking the refreshing sea breeze after long days under the intense heat. -
The “shield” microclimate
Protected by the Sierra de Gádor, Aguadulce enjoys a unique microclimate. While strong Poniente or Levante winds may sweep across other parts of Almería, the sea here is often calmer and the air noticeably milder. -
A hidden treasure beneath your feet: Ribera de la Algaida
Nearby lies the archaeological site of Turaniana, home to the remains of a Roman settlement. Even more remarkable is its Posidonia reef, one of the few natural monuments of its kind in the Mediterranean, forming an underwater ecosystem that helps keep the water exceptionally clear.

Almería: untouched beaches and cinematic scenery
Almería isn’t just another beach destination, it’s a unique blend of desert landscapes, traditional villages, and Mediterranean coastline. Ideal for families and couples seeking a sunny break with a taste of local culture, this corner of Andalusia is full of surprises.
Make sure you visit:
- The Alcazaba of Almería: a massive Moorish fortress with panoramic views.
- The old town of Níjar: known for pottery, textiles, and whitewashed charm.
- Tabernas Desert: Europe’s only desert, used in countless western movies.
- Cabo de Gata Natural Park: a protected area with dramatic cliffs and coves.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Genoveses Beach: wide, natural, and perfect for a peaceful day.
- Mónsul Beach: famous for its volcanic rock formations and clear water.
- Playa del Zapillo: right in Almería city, with all facilities nearby.
- Aguadulce Beach: great for families with calm waters and playgrounds.
Family-Friendly activities:
- Visit the MiniHollywood Theme Park in Tabernas, with shows and a zoo.
- Take an easy hike through Cabo de Gata with stops at scenic viewpoints.
- Try kayaking or snorkeling tours in crystal-clear waters.
- Spend the evening strolling along the seaside promenade with ice cream.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Fried fish (“pescaíto frito”) in beachfront bars.
- “Migas” and “gurullos”, two hearty traditional dishes.
- Local tapas: order a drink and get a snack for free!
- Artisan ice creams, perfect on a warm Almería evening.
Make the most of your visit and go to ...
- Mojácar (1h drive): a hilltop village with stunning sea views.
- Sorbas (40 min): explore the karst caves with guided tours.
- Roquetas de Mar (30 min): offers a castle, aquarium, and a family-friendly beach.
- Las Negras & San José: charming coastal towns within Cabo de Gata.

We stayed with only bed and breakfast. Room and hotel is clean. Did not use the pool or other facilities. The breakfast itself is fine
However the breakfast room it is not a Nice place to easy enjoy your breakfast. It is loud and crowded. It is my personal experience that I did not like this. Next time I would book without breakfast.
Superb
Estaba limpio.
The mattress is far too firm and in the bathroom there was nothing except the shower soap.

The room needs a bit of maintenance; there were damp stains on the ceiling that smelled strongly of damp, which was far from pleasant.

Fabulous
Drinks were a bit pricey and the rooms need some refurbishment, especially the bathrooms. The mattresses are spring ones and rather uncomfortable. At this time of year you only find older people on the holidays; the entertainment is a bit boring.

Bien
Hi—we were on the 3rd floor and the toilet cistern didn't work properly. Another point is that if you take Full Board, at meals you should at least be given something to drink besides water.

If I had to mention one minor drawback — and it's not really a big one — the buffet is a bit small.

The whole hotel needs renovating, including the buffet.

La ubicación
The room was a duplex but was very noisy, like an engine running day and night.
On themed-food days there weren’t many alternatives for those of us who can’t eat that food.

There was an unpleasant smell of burnt kerosene coming from one of the hotel chimneys by the pools. The cleanliness was fine but could have been better.

Apart from the food, the furniture and the terraces desperately need a coat of paint — they’re disgusting. A renovation would do them a lot of good.
