Why this destination is a must-visit

Much more than seafood: The secrets of the peninsula of O Grove

O Grove, known as the "Seafood Paradise" in the Rías Baixas (Galicia), is a fascinating place with stories that go far beyond its spider crab dishes.

Here are some of the most interesting curiosities:

  • Peninsula or Island? In the past, O Grove was an island. Over the centuries, sea currents and winds naturally accumulated sand to create the isthmus that today forms the beach of A Lanzada. This arm of land joined the island to the continent, turning it into the peninsula we know today.

  • The Island of Sculptures (A Toxa) The famous island of La Toja (A Toxa) hides one of the most unique churches in the world: the Hermitage of San Caralampio. The curious thing is that it is completely covered with scallop shells. This was done to protect the walls of the sea moisture and saltpeter, becoming a unique visual icon.

  • The "donkey" origin of the Spa Legend has it that the healing power of the thermal waters of La Toja was discovered thanks to a donkey. A farmer abandoned his sick donkey on the island to die peacefully; some time later, he returned and found the animal healthy, strong and with shiny hair after having wallowed in the mud and thermal waters of the area.

  • The Seafood Festival O Grove celebrates every October the Fiesta de Exaltación del Marisco, declared of National Tourist Interest. Such is its magnitude that tons of seafood products are served, and it is the best time to see the tradition of the shellfish workers working on the beaches.

  • An open-air "Museum If you stroll through the center of town, you will notice that there are dozens of granite sculptures in the squares and streets. This is due to an international symposium that is held periodically, where artists from all over the world leave their mark on the town.

  • The cemetery under the sand Near the beach of A Lanzada is an impressive archaeological site. Remains of a Roman salting factory and a necropolis have been found where the bodies are surprisingly well preserved due to the composition of the sand and the lime of the shells.

Rías Baixas: wild coastline, fresh seafood and Atlantic charm at its finest

The Rías Baixas are Galicia's green, salty south: a coastline of deep sea inlets, pine-covered hills and fishing villages where the Atlantic sets the pace of daily life. Famous for its Albariño wine, some of the best seafood in Spain and beaches that look almost tropical on a sunny day, it is a relaxed, unhurried corner of the country that families and couples fall for very quickly.

Make sure you visit:

  • Combarro, a village of stone hórreos (raised granaries) built right at the water's edge.
  • Cambados and its grand Praza de Fefiñáns, the capital of Albariño wine.
  • The Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands National Park, and the walk up to the lighthouse.
  • O Grove and A Toxa Island, known for seafood and spa waters.
  • Pontevedra's old town, one of the loveliest and most walkable historic centres in Galicia.

Beaches we think you'll like:

  • Praia de Rodas (Cíes Islands): white sand and turquoise water, with daily visitor numbers capped.
  • A Lanzada: a long open-sea beach between Sanxenxo and O Grove, with dunes and full services.
  • Praia de Silgar (Sanxenxo): sheltered and central, with cafés and shops right on the promenade.
  • Praia América (Nigrán): two kilometres of sand backed by pine trees, a local family favourite.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Take a boat trip out to the mussel rafts (bateas) from O Grove, tasting included.
  • Catch the ferry to the Cíes or Ons Islands for a day of beach and easy coastal walks.
  • Walk the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga in Armenteira, a shaded riverside path past old watermills.
  • Visit Acquarium Galicia in O Grove to meet the Atlantic species up close.
  • Discover local markets and traditional seaside festivals.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Pulpo á feira: octopus with paprika, coarse salt and olive oil, served on a wooden plate.
  • Galician mussels and fresh oysters straight from the rafts of O Grove.
  • Empanada gallega, a savoury pie usually filled with tuna, cockles or meat.
  • Scallops and zamburiñas, grilled and served in their shell.
  • A cold glass of Albariño, the crisp white wine that defines the region.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Vigo (30 min): the largest city in Galicia, with great views and even better food.
  • Santiago de Compostela (1h): the iconic pilgrimage city at the end of the Camino.
  • Illa de Ons (by boat): a quieter alternative to the Cíes Islands.
  • Baiona (40 min): coastal charm, a seafront fortress and plenty of maritime history.

5.9 Carmen Travelled with couple September 2026 The bed was narrower than normal. A double bed of less than 135 cm — I think it was 120 cm. Uncomfortable for two people to sleep in. I would recommend the hotel install air conditioning; it was quite hot.

7.1 Elena Travelled with couple September 2025 The hotel is situated in a fabulous setting for a restful stay and surrounded by nature. The facilities and rooms are appropriate. The breakfast was adequate for its range. We had an issue with the room and they changed it for us quickly.
I'd say, perhaps, that overall it seems a bit "minimalist" to me in terms of facilities and services.

If I had to mention something, perhaps one of the bathrooms could be updated. But they’re so clean and well maintained that it isn’t really necessary.

6.6 Angel Travelled with couple August 2025 The pool and the breakfast were both quite good for me.
When we arrived the room had two single beds instead of a double, though that apparently was our mistake. It wasn’t very clean and the bathroom hairdryer was broken. I spoke with Jump2spain.com and they gave me no solution and basically said that’s what there was... On the second day there was a creature bigger than a mouse, and they even laughed about it, as if they were used to sleeping with them.

8.9 Eva Travelled with couple July 2025 If there were food available at the hotel it would be wonderful; you can buy something and eat it there, so all things considered it’s not bad. The breakfast is quite good. The surroundings are beautiful, with coves very close to the hotel that you can walk to. One of them has a chiringuito where you can eat and dine while enjoying a spectacular sunset. The staff are incredible.
