Why this destination is a must-visit
Migjorn: Formentera’s wild, endless and untamed coast
Discover the Caribbean soul of the Pitiusas Islands! Stretching along almost the entire southern coast of Formentera, Migjorn, meaning “noon” or “south” in Catalan, is the island’s longest beach, with more than 5 kilometres of golden sand, crystal-clear waters and an unspoilt, laid-back atmosphere.
Migjorn’s hidden gems
- A hippie haven in the ’60s and ’70s: this area became an epicentre of the alternative movement in the Balearic Islands. Music legends such as Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and King Crimson spent time here, finding inspiration by the sea and at its legendary beach bars.
- The legendary beach bars of the era, Fonda Pepe and Piratabus: the iconic Piratabus began in the ’70s as a dismantled military bus selling beer on the sand. Today, it is still going strong, serving mojitos and playing classical music at sunset.
- A mosaic of small coves: although known as one beach, Migjorn is actually made up of many interconnected coves, including Es Arenals, Caló d’es Mort, Es Mal Pas and Es Ca Marí, each with its own character and type of sand.
- Caló d’es Mort, a picture-perfect spot: at the eastern end of Migjorn, this tiny cove is surrounded by traditional wooden boat houses, known as escars, where local fishermen shelter their boats. It is one of the most photographed scenes in the Mediterranean.
- Wooden walkways protecting the dunes: to help preserve the fragile ecosystem of dunes and juniper trees, the coastline is connected by elevated wooden walkways, perfect for exploring on foot while respecting the natural surroundings.
Our recommendation: wind conditions make all the difference in Migjorn. On days when the Tramuntana blows from the north, you can often enjoy a completely calm, crystal-clear sea, almost as smooth as a swimming pool.
