Peñíscola: Mediterranean history, castle views and beaches to switch off

Peñíscola is one of those destinations that has it all: golden beaches, Mediterranean charm and a fascinating history crowned by its iconic castle overlooking the sea.

Famous for being the refuge of Pope Luna and for appearing in productions such as Game of Thrones, this coastal town perfectly combines culture, relaxation and spectacular scenery.

What shouldn’t you miss?

  • Pope Luna’s Castle
An impressive Templar fortress built on top of the rock facing the Mediterranean. Walking through its walls, discovering the history of Pope Benedict XIII and enjoying the panoramic views from the top is an essential experience in Peñíscola.

  • The Old Town and the Bufador
Its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and blue windows create one of the most charming old quarters on the Mediterranean coast. During your walk, don’t miss the famous Bufador — a natural opening in the rocks where the sea crashes and blows dramatically on rough sea days.

  • Two very different beaches in the same destination

    • North Beach: long, wide and with fine sand, perfect for families and with unbeatable views of the castle.
    • South Beach: smaller, more sheltered and with calm waters ideal for relaxing.
  • Mediterranean gastronomy with local flavour
Beyond the promenade restaurants, the taverns hidden inside the old town walls are where you’ll discover the most authentic flavours. Don’t leave without trying dishes such as all i pebre monkfish stew or local sea snails.

Our recommendation:
If you love nature, explore the nearby Sierra de Irta Natural Park, one of the last untouched stretches of Mediterranean coastline, filled with hidden coves, cliffs and peaceful landscapes far from the crowds.

Castellón is a great choice for travellers who want to enjoy the Mediterranean at a slower, more relaxed pace. Located on Spain’s eastern coast, in the Valencian Community, it offers a lovely mix of wide beaches, local culture, family-friendly plans and traditional cuisine. Its historic centre is easy to explore, while the maritime district of El Grao brings you closer to the sea, the port and some of the best local flavours.

Make sure you visit:

  • El Fadrí, the city’s iconic bell tower and one of Castellón’s most recognisable landmarks.
  • Santa María Co-Cathedral, located right in the heart of the historic centre.
  • Plaza Mayor, a pleasant starting point for wandering through the old town.
  • El Grao de Castellón, the maritime district, ideal for a walk near the port.
  • Ribalta Park, one of the city’s most traditional green spaces.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Playa del Pinar: spacious, comfortable and ideal for families.
  • Playa del Gurugú: perfect for long seaside walks and relaxed beach days.
  • Playa del Serradal: a quieter option with a more natural feel.
  • Playa de Heliópolis: a pleasant stretch of coast for enjoying the Mediterranean breeze.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Spend the day at Playa del Pinar, with plenty of space for children to play.
  • Visit the Castellón Planetarium, located near the seafront.
  • Enjoy a relaxed walk around El Grao and the marina area.
  • Have a picnic or take a break in Ribalta Park.
  • Explore the city centre on foot, with short distances between the main sights.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Arroz a banda: a traditional rice dish full of Mediterranean flavour.
  • Paella marinera: a seafood version of Spain’s most famous rice dish.
  • Fresh fish and seafood in El Grao, one of the best areas for local cuisine.
  • Savoury cocas, a typical local snack made with simple, tasty ingredients.
  • Seasonal produce from the surrounding Valencian countryside.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Benicàssim: around 20 minutes away by car, known for its beaches and seaside atmosphere.
  • Vilafamés: around 30 minutes away, a charming inland village with cobbled streets and beautiful views.
  • Oropesa del Mar: a nearby coastal town with beaches, coves and a relaxed holiday feel.
  • Peñíscola: one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the province, famous for its castle by the sea.

6.4 Samira Travelled with family June 2026 Lack of cleanliness, disorder at breakfast and there was almost nothing, and the juices were finished by about 9 a.m. On the whole, the breakfast was very poor. The cleaning was terrible and toilet paper and soap were not replenished. The balcony of the room was disheartening.

6 Cristina Travelled with couple June 2026 Correct facilities, within a 2-minute walk from the hotel you reach the seashore. Undoubtedly the standout feature. The beach starts with stones, but you can swim a little further out and there is sand. As for the food, generally tasty. A bit of variety was missed, but staying 4 nights at the hotel, it isn’t a big deal.
Friendly staff, except for some workers who, with dishes on the tables ready to be cleared, are standing around talking and laughing among themselves. Regarding the food, I think they should take care with the image of the cooks present. It’s not pleasant to see someone switching from one paella pan to another, and the cook slurping the ladle to serve, eating rice. I hoped he wouldn’t use that same ladle so that other people could use the freshly cooked paella he had just placed... but that wasn’t the case. I felt very embarrassed, and I didn’t go back to serving myself paella with the ladle they had there.

9.1 Irene Travelled with family June 2026 The hotel is opposite the beach and is perfect for going with children. Both the buffet and the hotel staff are good.
The only negative would be that the bed pillows are very uncomfortable, as they are very flat. And the fruit at the buffet left a lot to be desired. Otherwise, everything was perfect.

10 Daniel Travelled with family June 2026 overall we liked everything a lot, but the meals were very good; only a few places offer lamb, grilled prawns, salmon, cuttlefish, etc.
The pools are a little remote, and you have to pay for sun loungers.

8 Maria Jose Travelled with family June 2026 The rooms are large and spacious, and the balcony is beautiful, big, and we had sea views. Wonderful.
Maravilloso.
What I liked least was that the apart-hotel doesn’t have a pool. They give you passes to go to a sports centre, which is very good and nearby, but every time you pass through you have to show the accreditations and go through the turnstile. And the worst part is that sun loungers have to be rented for €5 each; otherwise you end up lying on the concrete floor. In short, that is a very negative point.

9.4 Cristina Travelled with family June 2026 Perfect location just a step from the beach. Very friendly staff, clean and well-maintained facilities.
Personal amabilisimo, instalaciones limpias y cuidadas
In the meals most intended for children (calamari, nuggets, croquettes) there are cheap, frozen options. The pools not belonging to the hotel themselves is a bit inconvenient, especially due to the restrictive rules on sunbeds and food... a bit money‑grabbing, but that’s not the hotel’s fault.

7.1 Monica Travelled with family June 2026 The food was good, the staff’s service was unbeatable, both in the dining room, in the café, and in the entertainment.
The organisation was poor, as the hotel was full of school holiday children, so for families it wasn’t comfortable since they were making a racket, running along the corridors, and the restaurant was chaotic. What could have been resolved, since there is another hotel in the same chain just a few metres away, would have been to accommodation all the youngsters who come to play, shout and have a good time in one hotel and the families who want to rest in another. They sell you that there is a water park of 6000m² (in reality there are two pools with a total of four Water Slides and a small children’s pool; the 6000m² are completed by football and tennis courts which incur a charge) and sun loungers are for hire (in no hotel have I had to pay to use sun loungers by the pool, which I find embarrassing, since I am already paying to use the facilities). The mattresses are very soft and, given my back problems, not good at all, and they offer you another pillow for an extra €5 per day. They advertise that they are experts in family entertainment for all ages and that from 13 June it indicated peak season, so there would be activities all day and for all ages. In reality there were only crafts from 16:00 to 18:00; with the kids around, there were neither evening shows, nor aqua aerobics, nor animated breakfasts or anything else they advertise, which I found disappointing. I think it’s a hotel that is fine, with extraordinary human quality from its staff, but we were unlucky. It is on the beachfront but 2km from the entertainment area.

The food buffet for both lunch and dinner is very disappointing for a 4-star, with very little variety for small children and many frozen products; despite so many chefs, even the desserts feel industrial. The car park at 20 euros per day is a bit expensive.

Overall, misleading advertising, service especially from the reception staff and the SPA is terrible, food is average for the price you pay, dirty rooms, dirty sheets on the day of arrival, dirty curtains, everything in general. I do not recommend this aparthotel at all.

8.9 Merce Travelled with family May 2026
