Why this destination is a must-visit
Poio, the Rías Baixas theme park
Think Poio is just a stopover village next to Pontevedra? Think again. This is a whole municipality packed with more records, mysteries and contrasts per square metre than almost anywhere else in Galicia.
Here’s why it deserves a spot on your travel radar:
-
The birthplace of Columbus?: Forget Genoa. In Poio, they fiercely defend the theory of a “Galician Columbus”. You can even visit his family’s house museum in Porto Santo.
-
A world record granary: The Monastery of San Xoán hides the largest capacity hórreo on the planet. A 33 metre long stone giant with 51 pairs of legs. No small feat.
-
California in Galicia: On Monte Castrove, you can wander through the largest redwood forest in Europe. It was a gift from the USA in 1992, and today, walking among these giants with views over the estuary is a spectacular experience.
-
Combarro, the irresistible village: The crown jewel. A unique historic setting carved in stone, famous for its more than 30 hórreos lined up by the sea and its cruceiros wrapped in legends of witches, meigas.
-
Mirror like beaches: Sheltered by the estuary, beaches such as Cabeceira have waters so calm they look like lakes. At low tide, the sea retreats hundreds of metres, revealing an incredible white sand desert.

In Poio, you can jump from an 18th century fishing village to a North American forest or a dream beach in ten minutes. You don’t just visit it, you devour it.
Pontevedra is one of Galicia’s most charming city breaks, perfect for travellers who enjoy slow walks, historic streets and great food. Located in the heart of the Rías Baixas, this compact and elegant city is known for its pedestrian-friendly old town, lively squares and easy access to the coast, making it a lovely choice for couples and families looking for culture, sea air and authentic Galician flavour.

- The Basilica of Santa María A Maior, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
