Why this destination is a must-visit
Peñíscola: Mediterranean history, castle views and beaches to switch off
Peñíscola is one of those destinations that has it all: golden beaches, Mediterranean charm and a fascinating history crowned by its iconic castle overlooking the sea.
Famous for being the refuge of Pope Luna and for appearing in productions such as Game of Thrones, this coastal town perfectly combines culture, relaxation and spectacular scenery.
What shouldn’t you miss?
-
Pope Luna’s Castle
An impressive Templar fortress built on top of the rock facing the Mediterranean. Walking through its walls, discovering the history of Pope Benedict XIII and enjoying the panoramic views from the top is an essential experience in Peñíscola. -
The Old Town and the Bufador
Its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and blue windows create one of the most charming old quarters on the Mediterranean coast. During your walk, don’t miss the famous Bufador — a natural opening in the rocks where the sea crashes and blows dramatically on rough sea days. -
Two very different beaches in the same destination
- North Beach: long, wide and with fine sand, perfect for families and with unbeatable views of the castle.
- South Beach: smaller, more sheltered and with calm waters ideal for relaxing.
-
Mediterranean gastronomy with local flavour
Beyond the promenade restaurants, the taverns hidden inside the old town walls are where you’ll discover the most authentic flavours. Don’t leave without trying dishes such as all i pebre monkfish stew or local sea snails.
Our recommendation:
If you love nature, explore the nearby Sierra de Irta Natural Park, one of the last untouched stretches of Mediterranean coastline, filled with hidden coves, cliffs and peaceful landscapes far from the crowds.

Castellón is a great choice for travellers who want to enjoy the Mediterranean at a slower, more relaxed pace. Located on Spain’s eastern coast, in the Valencian Community, it offers a lovely mix of wide beaches, local culture, family-friendly plans and traditional cuisine. Its historic centre is easy to explore, while the maritime district of El Grao brings you closer to the sea, the port and some of the best local flavours.
Make sure you visit:
- El Fadrí, the city’s iconic bell tower and one of Castellón’s most recognisable landmarks.
- Santa María Co-Cathedral, located right in the heart of the historic centre.
- Plaza Mayor, a pleasant starting point for wandering through the old town.
- El Grao de Castellón, the maritime district, ideal for a walk near the port.
- Ribalta Park, one of the city’s most traditional green spaces.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Playa del Pinar: spacious, comfortable and ideal for families.
- Playa del Gurugú: perfect for long seaside walks and relaxed beach days.
- Playa del Serradal: a quieter option with a more natural feel.
- Playa de Heliópolis: a pleasant stretch of coast for enjoying the Mediterranean breeze.
Family-friendly activities:
- Spend the day at Playa del Pinar, with plenty of space for children to play.
- Visit the Castellón Planetarium, located near the seafront.
- Enjoy a relaxed walk around El Grao and the marina area.
- Have a picnic or take a break in Ribalta Park.
- Explore the city centre on foot, with short distances between the main sights.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Arroz a banda: a traditional rice dish full of Mediterranean flavour.
- Paella marinera: a seafood version of Spain’s most famous rice dish.
- Fresh fish and seafood in El Grao, one of the best areas for local cuisine.
- Savoury cocas, a typical local snack made with simple, tasty ingredients.
- Seasonal produce from the surrounding Valencian countryside.
Make the most of your visit and go to...
- Benicàssim: around 20 minutes away by car, known for its beaches and seaside atmosphere.
- Vilafamés: around 30 minutes away, a charming inland village with cobbled streets and beautiful views.
- Oropesa del Mar: a nearby coastal town with beaches, coves and a relaxed holiday feel.
- Peñíscola: one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the province, famous for its castle by the sea.
