Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Roses: Where History, Legends and Sea Collide
Roses is far more than sun and beach. This Alt Empordà gem packs an astonishing concentration of history, character and surprises into every corner.
The Luxury Bunker (El Bulli)
Cala Montjoi put Roses at the epicentre of global gastronomy. Here, Ferran Adrià rewrote the rules of fine dining. It wasn’t just the best restaurant in the world — today, elBulli1846 stands as a museum devoted to creativity and efficiency. A true pilgrimage site for food lovers.
A “Citadel” That’s a Time Machine
Step inside the Ciutadella de Roses and travel through layers of civilisation. Dig beneath the surface and discover:
- Remains of the Greek city of Rhode (founded in 776 BC).
- A Roman settlement.
- A medieval monastery.
All within the same monumental enclosure.
A Renaissance Military Fortress
Few places on earth let you walk across 2,500 years of history without leaving the same site. Here, every stone tells a different story.
The Cemetery of Giants (Dolmens)
Roses boasts one of Catalonia’s highest concentrations of megalithic monuments. The Dolmen de la Creu d’en Cobertella is the largest in the area — its top slab weighs an incredible 18 tonnes. Imagine moving that 5,000 years ago, without cranes or machinery.
A “Cartoon Castle”
The Castell de la Trinitat surprises with its unusual five-pointed star design. Built in the 16th century to defend the bay from pirates and corsairs, it was later destroyed during the Peninsular War and rebuilt in a modern style that gives it a striking, almost sci-fi look carved into the rock.
A Dalí-Worthy Sunset
Roses is uniquely positioned on the Costa Brava facing west. The result? One of the rare places where you can watch the sun set over the sea, painting the sky in fiery oranges and violets — the kind of landscapes that inspired Salvador Dalí.
Did You Know…?
The Bay of Roses belongs to the exclusive “Most Beautiful Bays in the World” club, endorsed by UNESCO, alongside icons like Ha Long Bay in Vietnam and San Francisco Bay.

Costa Brava: Wild Beauty, Mediterranean Soul
The Costa Brava is one of the most spectacular coastal regions in Spain. Located in the province of Girona, it is famous for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear coves and charming fishing villages. It’s an ideal destination for couples and families looking to combine beach time, nature and authentic Mediterranean culture.
Make sure you visit:
- Cadaqués, a whitewashed village with strong artistic roots and a unique atmosphere.
- Calella de Palafrugell, known for its small coves and traditional seaside charm.
- Tossa de Mar, with its impressive medieval walls overlooking the sea.
- Begur, offering historic streets, viewpoints and stunning beaches.
Beaches we think you’ll like:
- Aiguablava: shallow waters and turquoise colours, perfect for families.
- Sa Tuna: small and picturesque, surrounded by traditional houses.
- Tamariu: calm, clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Cala Pola: natural and scenic, ideal for snorkelling.
Family-friendly activities:
- Walk along the Camí de Ronda, connecting coves and cliffs.
- Kayaking or snorkelling in crystal-clear waters.
- Visit the Parque Natural del Cap de Creus for easy nature walks.
- Enjoy local markets and seaside promenades.
Make sure you try these local delicacies:
- Suquet de peix, a traditional fishermen’s stew.
- Fresh seafood and grilled fish.
- Rice dishes combining sea and mountain flavours.
- Wines from the Empordà wine region.
Make the most of your visit and go to...
- Girona (45 minutes): a beautifully preserved historic centre.
- Empordà (short drive): medieval villages and vineyards.
- Figueres (1 hour): home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

The buffet had very little variety, it is one of the smallest I have seen and quite average, the sports activities within the hotel such as mini golf should not have an extra cost and the sports facilities need maintenance as they are very deteriorated, the only thing open all day is the pool bar there is nothing else in this hotel, the buffet is one of the smallest I have seen in my life with very little variety and quite average, by allowing pets you can hear them barking in the rooms when their owners leave, we had one right next to us as well, you cannot walk to anything, there is no minibar fridge in the room or phone, the pool music was the same every day (classics) and extremely loud and people smoked and carried their glass and crystal bottles. The hotel itself for me does not reach 3 stars.

The only thing that failed me a little is that, my fault, I imagined there would be a walk to the town of Roses and no, you had to take a car because it was a somewhat desolate road but, well, being on the outskirts also gave you a landscape from the sun lounger that you wouldn't have otherwise, those trees, the mountains...

The buffet is below average. In the evening, you will have to buy your bottle of water because the hotel refuses to give you tap water. We asked and insisted, but to no avail.

Buena y amplia piscina.
There are no umbrellas at the pool, only the shade of a tree in one corner from 12 o'clock. The room doesn't have a fridge, only two sockets, one of them on the opposite wall. The wall is peeling off due to air conditioning condensation. You have to turn it up to the max to feel comfortable, but then it makes a lot of noise. Light switches on only one side. You have to go downstairs to get the key for the safe and pay.

When they fail in a service, they must compensate for it. Employees must sign them better and instill that they must be more pleasant and friendly with the customers. ROOMS IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A FRIDGE.

La localización y la piscina
Some aspects, no, many or rather, almost everything is improvable in this hotel. Starting with the fact that they offer rooms with double beds and the only rooms with double beds are the suites that do not appear on this page. In order to stay in a suite, I had to pay an extra €65 per night, a total of €195 + €526 = €721.00. I really don't even know how to begin to tell the whole adventure we had in this hotel. We arrived quite late, around 7:30 p.m., and we couldn't use the pool, but it's better because they had an inspection and found out that there was no chlorine. There is no lifeguard at the pool. We went to dinner and the food was very scarce and in conditions that are not allowed by law, oil and vinegar in open bottles, cooked mussels from who knows when. The man frying the eggs had uncut and dirty nails... When he should wear gloves, he wasn't. The butter was cut into cubes from a package, in a bowl and not in individual containers, as specified by law. We arrived at the suite and it had a jacuzzi, but when we turned it on, all the dirt from the pipes came out, so we didn't use it again throughout our stay.
On the second day, we requested three times for the towels to be changed, they changed them, but at 4:00 in the afternoon... you have to consider that this hotel has a pool and after using it, anyone needs to shower and then dry off. To get to the suite, we had to pass through a corridor that had no light at night, we mentioned it to the manager and he said that maintenance had been notified for days, but when we left, it still wasn't working. There are more details but I think with this, you should take action and not ruin anyone else's holiday. I specify that I am a photographer, but I haven't taken photos of all these things because I am not any kind of police and I had gone to have a good time.

Well, I don't know where to start, but the worst experience, really bad, that we have had these 4 days. If you don't want to waste your money, please don't go. Poor breakfasts, I mean really poor, there is almost no bread, scarce cold cuts, and dry from poor pbooking. You have to keep asking for milk because if one bottle runs out, they take more than 10 minutes to bring it. There is no lactose-free milk. From the bakery, they give you 1 box of croissants, 1 of ensaimada, and the other of chocolate rolls. When they run out, there are no more. I won't continue, bad ham, really bad, only the first day we were there. The dinners were a show. Every day the same and of very low quality. In short, I CAN tell you it's a waste of money. All the guests are extremely unhappy. The chef, don't even get me started, handling food without gloves with hands that you better not even think about, honestly. Horrible experience. Pool without a lifeguard. The room is the worst. Walls with dampness and bugs from said humidity. If you read reviews, you'll see. Horrible experience, if you don't want to waste money, I repeat, don't go.

We did not like the food, the breakfast cold cuts have been the same dry and very bad color for three days, and dinner was scarce and of poor quality. We asked for mayonnaise and the next day the same bowl that was brought to us was still there. If they took care of those details and improved the food quality, we would come back. It's a hotel that is not fully booked, but it's normal if they don't take care of those things, especially with the meals.
