Why this destination is a must-visit
Mazarrón: curiosities beneath the sun
Mazarrón is much more than sun and beaches. This corner of Murcia hides a history so deep that it literally reaches the bottom of the sea.
Here are some of the most fascinating curiosities of this Mediterranean destination:
The treasure under the sea: Phoenician ships
Mazarrón is home to one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries in the world. On La Isla beach, two Phoenician ships more than 2,600 years old were discovered.
- The Mazarrón II, the most complete ancient ship ever found in the Mediterranean. For decades it was protected underwater by a metallic “sarcophagus” to prevent deterioration, until in 2024 its complex extraction began so it could be restored and displayed.
Martian landscapes: the abandoned mines
Visit the mines of San Cristóbal and Los Perules and it will feel like stepping onto another planet. Thanks to the high concentration of minerals such as iron, lead and alum, the ground displays striking shades of red, ochre and purple.
- Curious fact: when it rains, deep red pools appear that resemble lakes of rust or blood, creating an almost post apocalyptic landscape that photographers love.
The “Enchanted City”: the erosions of Bolnuevo
Facing Bolnuevo beach stand Las Gredas, extraordinary rock formations sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years.
Their whimsical shapes resemble giant mushrooms or melted sandcastles. Local legends even tell of nature spirits that once inhabited these rocks.
The legend of the miracle and the pirates
Every 17 November the Romería del Milagro is celebrated, recalling an event from 1585. According to tradition, a fleet of Barbary pirates tried to sack the town but fled in terror when they saw a celestial light and the figure of the Virgin.
- Curiosity: it is said the pirates heard the noise of a huge army. In reality, some locals were playing cards and shouting phrases like “I have twelve horses” or “I have ten swords”, which the pirate spies mistakenly believed referred to the town’s real military strength.
The origin of Roman “Garum”
Mazarrón was once a key industrial centre of the Roman Empire thanks to its salted fish factory. Here they produced Garum, a fermented fish sauce considered the “ketchup” of antiquity and a luxury product exported throughout Rome.
Whale and dolphin watching
You do not need to cross oceans to see marine giants. The Bay of Mazarrón is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to spot dolphins, pilot whales and even sperm whales, thanks to its deep waters and rich marine life.

Cartagena is one of those destinations that quietly surprises you the more you explore it. Located on Spain’s southeastern coast in the Region of Murcia, this historic port city blends over 2,000 years of history with a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. It’s an ideal getaway for couples and families looking for culture, sunshine, and authentic local charm without the crowds.

- The hilltop Castillo de la Concepción, offering panoramic views over the harbour.
