Why this destination is a must-visit

Curiosities about Comarruga

Comarruga is much more than a beach. Beneath its calm seaside image lies a mix of thermal waters, cultural heritage and unique natural phenomena that set it apart on the Costa Dorada.

  • Thermal water on the sand
Right in the heart of Comarruga, a thermal spring flows directly into the beach. Its water emerges at a constant 18–21°C all year round and is rich in mineral salts. Best of all, it’s public — you can bathe in the Riuet for free, even in winter.

  • From elite spa resort to family favourite
In the early 20th century, Comarruga was an exclusive health destination. A grand spa attracted Barcelona’s bourgeoisie, drawn by waters said to be miraculous for skin and joint conditions.

  • Pau Casals’ Mediterranean refuge
World-famous cellist Pau Casals chose nearby Sant Salvador as his summer retreat. Today, his seafront home is a museum that reflects how the light and sound of this coastline inspired his music.

  • A unique marine reserve
Just offshore lies the Masia Blanca protected area, created to preserve a circular reef full of biodiversity. Freshwater currents from the thermal spring create marine life you won’t usually see so close to the coast.

  • Golden, crystal-fine sand
Comarruga’s beach is exceptionally wide and known for its fine, intensely golden sand, shaped by quartz- and feldspar-rich rocks from nearby mountains — even in August, there’s room to breathe.

  • A harbour with a twist
Its marina was built by reclaiming land from the sea to protect boats from strong Levante winds, giving it a distinctive shape and an unusual engineering story.

Costa Dorada: Spain’s ultimate family-friendly coastal destination

The Costa Dorada, located on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia just south of Barcelona, is one of Spain’s most popular holiday regions for families and couples. Known for its long golden-sand beaches, relaxed atmosphere and excellent leisure options, it’s a destination that perfectly combines beach time, culture and fun.

Make sure you visit:

  • Tarragona, with its impressive Roman ruins overlooking the sea.
  • Salou, lively and ideal for families, with a beautiful seafront promenade.
  • Cambrils, famous for its harbour and excellent restaurants.
  • Reus, the birthplace of Gaudí, full of modernist architecture.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Llevant Beach (Salou): wide, well-equipped and family-friendly.
  • Cambrils Beach: calm waters and a relaxed local feel.
  • La Pineda Beach: long and spacious, perfect for walks by the sea.
  • Cala Fonda: a more natural and scenic cove near Tarragona.

Family-friendly activities:

  • Spend an unforgettable day at PortAventura World, one of Europe’s best theme parks.
  • Enjoy safe, shallow waters ideal for children.
  • Walk or cycle along the coastal promenades.
  • Discover Roman history through open-air sites and museums.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Traditional seafood paella and rice dishes.
  • Fideuà, made with noodles instead of rice.
  • Fresh grilled fish from the Mediterranean.
  • Local wines and cava from nearby Penedès.

Make the most of your visit and go to...

  • Tarragona (15–20 minutes): Roman heritage and charming old town.
  • Reus (20 minutes): shopping and modernist routes.
  • Barcelona (1 hour): culture, architecture and vibrant city life.

Explicamos nuestra situación a Lidia (creo recordar).
