Why this destination is a must-visit

Curiosities of Mojácar

Mojácar is one of those places where legend, history and Mediterranean lifestyle blend effortlessly. Small in size, big in personality.

  • The enigma of the Indalo
Mojácar is the birthplace of the Indalo, the famous figure of a man holding a rainbow. Long before becoming the symbol of Almería, it was painted on Mojácar’s houses to protect homes from bad luck and the evil eye.

  • Was Walt Disney born here?
One of Spain’s most famous urban legends claims that Walt Disney was actually born in Mojácar, the son of a local woman who emigrated to the United States. Never proven, but proudly embraced by the town.

  • The white village that never sleeps
Mojácar lives in two worlds: Mojácar Pueblo, perched in the mountains with pure Andalusian charm, and Mojácar Playa, with 17 km of coastline and a vibrant, legendary nightlife.

  • A Hollywood hideaway
Almería has hosted iconic films like Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia and classic Westerns. For decades, Mojácar has been a favourite refuge for actors and film crews drawn by its light, landscapes and discretion.

Almería: untouched beaches and cinematic scenery

Almería isn’t just another beach destination, it’s a unique blend of desert landscapes, traditional villages, and Mediterranean coastline. Ideal for families and couples seeking a sunny break with a taste of local culture, this corner of Andalusia is full of surprises.

Make sure you visit:

  • The Alcazaba of Almería: a massive Moorish fortress with panoramic views.
  • The old town of Níjar: known for pottery, textiles, and whitewashed charm.
  • Tabernas Desert: Europe’s only desert, used in countless western movies.
  • Cabo de Gata Natural Park: a protected area with dramatic cliffs and coves.

Beaches we think you’ll like:

  • Genoveses Beach: wide, natural, and perfect for a peaceful day.
  • Mónsul Beach: famous for its volcanic rock formations and clear water.
  • Playa del Zapillo: right in Almería city, with all facilities nearby.
  • Aguadulce Beach: great for families with calm waters and playgrounds.

Family-Friendly activities:

  • Visit the MiniHollywood Theme Park in Tabernas, with shows and a zoo.
  • Take an easy hike through Cabo de Gata with stops at scenic viewpoints.
  • Try kayaking or snorkeling tours in crystal-clear waters.
  • Spend the evening strolling along the seaside promenade with ice cream.

Make sure you try these local delicacies:

  • Fried fish (“pescaíto frito”) in beachfront bars.
  • “Migas” and “gurullos”, two hearty traditional dishes.
  • Local tapas: order a drink and get a snack for free!
  • Artisan ice creams, perfect on a warm Almería evening.

Make the most of your visit and go to ...

  • Mojácar (1h drive): a hilltop village with stunning sea views.
  • Sorbas (40 min): explore the karst caves with guided tours.
  • Roquetas de Mar (30 min): offers a castle, aquarium, and a family-friendly beach.
