Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar del Segura is the place where 19th-century engineering quite literally saved a town from being swallowed by the desert.
The Town That Almost Disappeared Under the Sand
By the late 19th century, shifting dunes were advancing between 2 and 8 metres per year, threatening to bury Guardamar entirely. The solution? A visionary project led by engineer Francisco Mira, who planted more than 600,000 trees — pines, palms and eucalyptus — across 800 hectares. The result is today’s stunning Pinada de Guardamar, a vast green barrier that still protects the town.
The Roof of Spain (And It’s Military)
Forget skyscrapers in Benidorm. The tallest structure on the Iberian Peninsula is right here: the Torre de los Americanos, also known as Torreta de Guardamar. Standing 375 metres high — taller than the Eiffel Tower — it was built by the U.S. Navy in 1962 to communicate with submarines.
A “Lady” with a Powerful Story
If you know the Lady of Elche, meet her “cousin”: the Lady of Guardamar. Discovered in 1987 at the Cabezo Lucero archaeological site, she was found shattered into more than 50 fragments. After meticulous restoration, she became one of the most important symbols of Iberian art.
The Caliphal Rábita: One of a Kind
Hidden beneath the dunes lay an extraordinary treasure: the only almost-intact Islamic monastic complex (Rábita) from the Umayyad period preserved in Spain. Dating back to the 10th century, it was discovered during the very reforestation works that stopped the dunes.
The Prawn with a “Coloured Tail”
The famous Guardamar prawn stands out not only for its exceptional quality, but for its striking tricolour tail in shades of purple, red and yellow. Paired with the local ñora — a small pepper dried directly on the dune sands — it forms the golden duo of the town’s gastronomy.
Did You Know…?
Every 31 January, Guardamar celebrates the Fiesta del Árbol, a tradition dating back to 1902. Local children continue planting trees each year, honouring the forest that saved — and still protects — their town.
