Meals & more
A Feast for the Senses
At Estival Isla Cristina, dining is taken seriously. What we love most is how the hotel brings the true flavours of the Huelva coast straight to the table, turning every meal into part of the experience:
-
The star product: Don’t leave without tasting the famous white prawns from Huelva or fresh coquinas. At the buffet, the daily fresh catch always takes centre stage and truly shines.
-
Themed dinners: A smart and enjoyable touch. The culinary offerings rotate regularly, so even longer stays feel varied, with everything from international cuisine to traditional local stews waiting to be discovered.
-
Sunset cocktails: The pool bar is our favourite spot as the sky turns shades of orange. Sit back with a carefully crafted cocktail and let the atmosphere do the rest.
Why this destination is a must-visit
The origin of an island that is not
Isla Cristina was born after the devastating earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. What began as a refuge of Catalan and Levantine fishermen's huts became a city of solid buildings. A curious fact is that its first name was La Higuerita, due to a fig tree located next to a fresh water well where sailors were supplied.
Unlike other Andalusian villages, here persists a strong Catalan heritage visible in surnames like Mirabent or Romeu, and in the local vocabulary: the fish market is called lota and the tap, cheta. Its current name, Isla Cristina, is a tribute in 1834 to Queen Maria Cristina for the humanitarian aid she sent to the town during a serious cholera epidemic.
Milestones of its seafaring identity
- Record port: It is the port with the highest turnover in Andalusia and one of the first in Spain. Its fish market is the heart of the city, where the fish auction is a daily spectacle of freshness.
- Land of poets: Its sunsets are so magnetic that they inspired literary routes with quotes from Luis Cernuda and Rafael Alberti.
- The white treasure: It has the last artisanal salt mines of Andalusia, where the flower of salt is still extracted following methods of the eighteenth century. Nature and Beaches
Its 12 kilometres of coastline offer from the lively Central Beach to unspoiled places like the Casita Azul, all embraced by the Paraje Natural de las Marismas, a labyrinth of water and wildlife.
