Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Cabanas
Cabanas is one of those places where the river, the forest and the sea come together in an almost magical way. Although many know it only on the way to Ferrol or for its famous beach, it hides fascinating details.
We share with you some curiosities that make this municipality a special place:
-
The Naturalist who "chatted" with Darwin One of the most surprising curiosities is that Víctor López Seoane lived in the Pazo de Cabanas (also known as Casa Grande de Rioboo). This illustrious Galician naturalist corresponded with none other than Charles Darwin. Seoane was a pioneer in the study of the fauna and flora of Galicia, and his legacy lives on in the scientific history of the area.
-
The bridge of 79 arches The bridge that connects Cabanas with Pontedeume was, in its original construction (14th century), one of the longest in Europe. It had no less than 79 arches and had two towers, a chapel and a hospital for pilgrims in the middle. Although today only 15 arches remain from the later reform, it is still the symbol of the union between the two towns.
-
A forest "frozen" in time Cabanas is one of the gateways to the Fragas do Eume. The curious thing about this natural park is that it is considered one of the best examples of thermophilic Atlantic forest in Europe. It has changed so little since the Tertiary period that walking through it is literally walking through a landscape of millions of years ago.
-
El Pinar de la Magdalena: a refuge with history A Madalena beach is famous for its huge pine forest. What you may not know is that this space is the social "lung" of the town; during the twentieth century it was the summer resort par excellence of the Galician bourgeoisie. Today, it is curious to see how the pine forest coexists with one of the beaches with less waves in the area, which makes it almost a "natural pool" of salt water.
-
The Golden Torque of Las Modias In the Castro de As Modias a gold torque (a Celtic neck jewel) was found in the 19th century, which is one of the most important pieces of the castrexa gold work. It is currently kept in the Archaeological Museum of the Castle of San Antón, in A Coruña, and is a reminder that Cabanas was a strategic place long before the Romans.
-
A fact not to be missed: If you like hiking, we recommend the Ruta da Auga. It passes by old mills and hidden streams that most tourists who only go to the beach don't get to see.

A Coruña: sea, history and Galician essence in its purest form
A Coruña is an Atlantic city with its own character, perfect for a holiday that combines sea, gastronomy and charming walks. Located in the northwest of Galicia, it surprises with its lively atmosphere, its history linked to the ocean and urban beaches that can be enjoyed all year round. It is an ideal destination for both couples and families looking for simple plans and good food.
What to visit?
Among its must-sees is the Tower of Hercules, the oldest working Roman lighthouse in the world and symbol of the city, surrounded by a pleasant promenade. The old town, known as the Old City, invites you to lose yourself among quiet squares, churches and viewpoints. The Plaza de María Pita, the heart of the city, and the Castle of San Antón, with privileged views of the harbor, are not to be missed.
What to do?
A Coruña is best experienced on foot. The promenade, one of the longest in Europe, is perfect for walking by the sea or renting a bike. The urban beaches allow you to combine tourism and relaxation without leaving the city, and the atmosphere of its bars and terraces enlivens both noon and night. If you are travelling with children, the Aquarium Finisterrae is a great plan for the whole family.
What to eat?
A Coruña's cuisine is a tribute to the Atlantic. Here the Galician octopus, goose barnacles, Galician empanada and fresh seafood shine, always accompanied by a good local white wine. At the end, nothing like a Santiago cake or a coffee overlooking the sea.
Our recommendation:
If you are looking for a gastronomic experience of the highest level in A Coruña, we suggest Restaurante Alborada, a benchmark of contemporary Galician cuisine. Its proposal revolves around the local and seasonal product, with special prominence of fish and seafood from the Atlantic, all taken care of to detail in an elegant but close atmosphere. A safe bet to enjoy the gastronomy of A Coruña with capital letters.
Nearby excursions:
Very close to the city it is worth visiting Betanzos, known for its historic center and its famous omelette, or approaching Ferrol, with an interesting naval heritage and access to wild beaches of the coast artabra. Two perfect plans to complete the holiday without rushing.
