Why this destination is a must-visit
Curiosities of Carvoeiro: Cliffs, Caves and Coastal Charm
Carvoeiro is one of the Algarve’s most photogenic villages — a former fishermen’s haven that has preserved its authentic scale and timeless charm while the rest of the coast transformed. Discover what makes this Portuguese gem so unique:
-
A Name with Pirate Echoes: The name “Carvoeiro” is believed to derive from the Arabic “Caboiere,” meaning fishing village. Yet its history also whispers of pirate raids, as its sheltered bay once served as both target and refuge for corsairs navigating the Algarve coast.
-
A Natural Amphitheatre of Colour: Whitewashed houses with blue and yellow accents cascade down the cliffs toward the central beach. The layout creates a striking amphitheatre effect — the golden sand as the stage, the village as the audience, and the Atlantic as the backdrop.
-
Algar Seco: Nature’s Rock Labyrinth: Just a short walk from the centre lies Algar Seco, a masterpiece sculpted by wind and waves. Limestone formations feature natural “windows” framing the deep blue ocean, and the famous cave “A Boneca” appears to gaze out to sea with two eye-shaped openings.
-
The Wooden Boardwalk: Follow one of the Algarve’s most scenic coastal walkways, stretching along the cliffs between the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação and Algar Seco. It’s the ultimate viewpoint for sea caves, dramatic rock formations and unforgettable sunsets.
-
Benagil: The Cathedral of the Sea: Although technically part of Lagoa, the iconic Benagil Cave is deeply connected to Carvoeiro, as most boat tours depart from its beach. With its natural oculus illuminating golden rock walls, it ranks among the most beautiful sea caves in the world.
-
The Fortress on the Horizon: Overlooking the bay stand the remains of the 1670 Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, built to defend against Moorish pirate attacks. Today, its peaceful chapel offers one of the most serene views over the village and the endless Atlantic.

Better attention at the reception. (Checking on) Yes, the receptionist at the check-in has been very kind.
